Black+Decker Workmate 825 Portable Workbench
The classic folding workbench, and still one of the smartest first buys — its split top is a giant vise that clamps whole boards. Cheap, foldable, and it does something no plain table can.
Strengths
- The clamping split top holds boards like a huge vise
- Folds away and stores upright
- Decades-proven design at a fair price
Trade-offs
- Lighter than a fixed bench — can skate on hand-tool chopping
- Small surface; not for big assemblies

Worth knowing. The Workmate's party trick is that the top is a vise — crank the handles and it grips a workpiece across its whole width. For a beginner with no bench vise, that alone makes it worth the money.
