How to Use a Router Safely

Feed direction, bit depth, climb cuts and the grip that stops a router running away — the rules that make the scariest beginner tool routine.

A router is a motor spinning a cutter at somewhere around twenty thousand revolutions a minute, held in your hands, with no guard over the cutting edge. Written down like that it sounds alarming, and beginners are right to treat it with more respect than a drill.

But a router is not unpredictable. It does exactly one surprising thing — it pulls itself in the direction the bit is spinning — and every safety rule on this page comes from managing that one behavior. Understand it and the router stops being the scary tool and becomes the one that makes your work look professional.

The one thing to understand: the bit pulls

Looking down at a handheld router from above, the bit spins clockwise. That spinning edge is trying to drag whatever it touches around with it. When it touches the edge of a board, one of two things happens depending on which way you move.

Move so that the bit meets the wood against its rotation, and the cutting force pushes the router base back toward you and holds it against the edge. The tool feels planted. That is a normal cut.

Move the other way and the bit rolls along the edge like a wheel, pulling the router forward, faster than you intended. That is a climb cut, and in a beginner’s hands it is how routers end up somewhere they should not be.

Feed direction, without the confusion

Almost every explanation of this gets tangled. Here it is in the two cases you will actually meet.

  • Routing the outside edge of a board — stand facing the edge and move the router left to right. Going around a rectangular board, that means traveling counterclockwise around it.
  • Routing inside a frame, a cutout or a circle — the geometry inverts. Move right to left as you face the edge, which means clockwise around the opening.
  • In a router table — the router is upside down, so the bit spins counterclockwise from your side of the fence. Feed the workpiece right to left, always between the fence and the bit, never on the far side.

If you cannot remember any of that in the moment, use the physical test: start the cut gently and feel which way the router wants to go. If it is pulling itself along, stop — you are climb cutting.

Depth: several light passes, always

The most common beginner mistake is setting the bit to full depth and taking one heavy pass. It burns, it chatters, it tears the grain out at the corners, and it makes the router hard to control because the cutting force is far higher than it needs to be.

Take around 1/8 inch of depth per pass in hardwood, a little more in softwood. A half-inch deep dado is four passes, and those four passes take less total time than one heavy pass plus the cleanup afterwards.

The same logic applies to bit diameter. Large-diameter bits — panel raisers, big round-overs — have a much higher rim speed and need the router’s speed dial turned down, not up. If your router has variable speed, use it; if it does not, keep to bits under about 1-1/4 inches in a handheld tool.

Fitting the bit properly

Two rules, and both of them prevent a bit working loose at speed.

  1. Unplug it first. Every time, no exceptions. A router that starts while a wrench is on the collet, or your fingers are on the cutter, is the injury this tool is genuinely capable of.
  2. Do not bottom the shank out. Push the bit fully in, then withdraw it about 1/8 inch before tightening. A shank resting on the base of the collet is gripped unevenly along its length and is far more likely to creep out under vibration.

Tighten firmly with the supplied wrenches — a collet is a friction grip, not a clamp on a flat, and a loose one lets the bit slip deeper mid-cut. And check that the collet itself is clean; resin build-up stops it closing evenly.

Holding the work, and holding the router

A router pushes hard sideways. If the workpiece slides, both hands are suddenly busy with a spinning cutter and a moving board.

Clamp the work, or use bench grippers — the advantage of grippers here is specific and real: nothing protrudes above the surface, so the router base never collides with a clamp head halfway along a cut. Our workholding guide covers both approaches.

Hold the router with both hands on its handles or, on a compact router, wrapped around the body low down. Keep the base flat on the work at all times — a tilted base is what turns a clean profile into a gouge. And keep the power cord over your shoulder or behind you, because a cord that catches under the base will lift it mid-cut.

Starting and stopping

  • Bring the router to full speed clear of the wood. Starting against the workpiece jerks the tool and loads the bit badly.
  • Enter the cut steadily, not by plunging into the middle of an edge. Start at a corner or run in from the end wherever possible.
  • Let it stop before you set it down. A spinning bit touching the bench will walk the tool across it. Most routers coast for several seconds after the trigger is released.
  • Never set a plunge router down unlocked. The bit drops below the base under spring pressure the moment you release the lock.

The tearout problem, and the one legitimate climb cut

When you round over the end grain of a board, the bit exits the far corner and blows a chip out of it. Two fixes, both simple: rout the end grain first and then the long grain, so the second pass removes the damage from the first; or clamp a sacrificial backer block against the exit corner so the blowout happens in the scrap.

The one place experienced woodworkers do climb cut deliberately is a very light final pass on figured grain that tears in the normal direction. It works because the cut is tiny, and it is safe only because they know exactly how the tool will pull. Leave it alone for your first year.

Dust and noise: not optional with this tool

A router produces the finest dust of any tool in a small shop — fine enough to stay airborne for hours — and it is loud enough to damage hearing over a session. Both are cumulative injuries with no dramatic moment to warn you.

Wear ANSI-rated eye protection, hearing protection, and a rated respirator rather than a paper nuisance mask. Connect the router’s dust port to a shop vac if it has one, and read dust collection for a small shop for the wider setup.

A first cut worth practicing

Take a scrap board, fit a 1/4 inch round-over bit, set it shallow, clamp the board down, and ease all four edges. Do it three or four times on different scraps until the direction stops needing thought.

It is a genuinely useful skill — an eased edge is what makes a shelf feel finished rather than cut — and it teaches the feed direction rule with a bit that cannot do much damage if you get it wrong. One safety note. Power tools deserve respect, not fear. Read the manual, keep the guards on, wear ANSI-rated eye protection every time, and never rush a cut. When something feels wrong, stop and reset — there is no deadline in a home shop.

Frequently asked questions

Which direction should you feed a router?

Against the rotation of the bit, so the cut pulls the router base into the work rather than pushing it away. For a handheld router working the outside edge of a board, that means moving left to right as you face the edge. Working inside a frame or a cutout, it reverses — right to left. In a router table, feed right to left past the bit.

What is a climb cut and is it dangerous?

A climb cut is feeding in the same direction as the bit spins. The bit then tries to pull the router along the work, and it can accelerate out of your hands very quickly. It is used deliberately by experienced woodworkers as a very light finishing pass on tearout-prone grain, and it is not something a beginner should do until routing feels routine.

How deep can you cut with a router in one pass?

As a working rule, no more than about 1/8 inch of depth per pass in hardwood, and no more than the bit's diameter in total width of cut. Deep passes overload the bit, burn the wood, chatter, and are the usual cause of a router jerking sideways. Several light passes are faster overall because you are not fixing tearout afterwards.

Why did my router bit burn the wood?

Almost always because the router dwelled in one spot — either you paused mid-cut or you fed too slowly for the bit's speed. Bearing-guided bits also burn if you press the bearing hard into the edge. Keep the router moving at a steady walking pace, take lighter passes, and reduce the speed setting on large-diameter bits.

Do I need a router table to start?

No. A handheld router does edge profiles, dados, rabbets and template work perfectly well, and it is what most beginners actually need. A table becomes worth it for small parts that are unsafe to hold under a handheld router, and for repeated identical profiles.

Should the bit be pushed all the way into the collet?

Nearly, but not quite. Insert the shank fully, then pull it back roughly 1/8 inch before tightening. A bit bottomed out against the base of the collet can be gripped unevenly and is more likely to creep out under vibration — which is how bits get thrown.
