How to Clamp Without Enough Clamps
Nine ways to close a glue joint when you own two clamps and need six — tape, wedges, rub joints, screws, and the ones that quietly do not work.

Everyone who starts woodworking arrives at the same evening. The glue is open, the parts are cut, and there are two clamps on the bench where six are needed. Clamps are the one tool you always need more of, and they are expensive enough that buying six good ones feels like buying a power tool.
The good news is that clamping is not magic. All a clamp does is hold two surfaces in contact, without moving, until the glue cures. Anything that achieves those three things is a clamp, and several of them cost nothing.
First, the thing that changes everything: you need less pressure than you think
Beginners crank clamps until the wood creaks, on the assumption that more pressure means a stronger joint. It does not. Modern PVA glue needs enough pressure to close the joint and hold it still — and past that point, extra pressure squeezes glue out of the joint line and starves it.
The target is a joint with no visible gap and a thin, even bead of squeeze-out along the line. If squeeze-out is running down the sides in ribbons, you used too much glue, too much pressure, or both. Our wood glue guide covers open times and cure times in detail.
This matters here because it means most of the alternatives below applyplenty of pressure. They are not compromises — they are different ways of doing the same modest job.
1. Painter’s tape as a tension strap
The best trick on this page, and the one most beginners have never seen. Lay the parts of a box or a mitered frame face down in a row, edges touching, and run tape across every joint. Apply glue, then roll the whole assembly up — the tape acts as a hinge and, when you pull the last joint closed and tape it, as a tension band around the whole box.
Use quality masking or painter’s tape and stretch it slightly as you apply it. It applies real, even pressure around a mitered frame, it costs almost nothing, and it cannot dent the workpiece. Nothing else closes a four-corner miter so easily.
2. Wedges against a fixed batten
The oldest panel clamp there is, and still one of the best. Screw a straight batten to a scrap board or your bench top, lay the boards to be glued against it, screw a second batten a little way beyond the far edge, and drive a pair of opposing wedges into the gap.
Two wedges sliding past each other convert a light tap into substantial pressure, and you can dial it precisely by how hard you tap. Add a scrap caul across the top of the boards, waxed or taped so glue will not stick to it, to stop the panel bowing upward. This is a genuine panel clamp made from offcuts and four screws.
3. The rub joint
For an edge-to-edge glue joint between two narrow boards, you may not need clamps at all. Spread glue on both edges, put them together, and rub them back and forth an inch or two until you feel the glue start to grab. Line them up, take your hands away, and leave it.
It works because a well-fitted long-grain joint has an enormous glue area, and the tack of the glue itself holds the parts still while it cures. Two conditions: the edges must already be straight and square — see how to use a hand plane — and it only works on long grain, never on end grain.
4. Screws
A screw is a clamp that installs itself and never has to come off. For shop furniture, carcass work, anything painted and anything hidden, this is not a compromise — it is the normal method.
Two details make the difference. Drill a clearance hole through the top piece so the threads only grip the lower piece; without it, the screw jacks the parts apart instead of pulling them together. Pocket-hole screws are the same idea at an angle, and they clamp unusually well because the screw pulls the joint together as it seats.
5. Weight
Gravity is free and applies perfectly even pressure. For a flat lamination — gluing a piece of ply to a panel, or two boards face to face — a stack of books, a bucket of water, a couple of paving slabs or a box of offcuts does the job.
Put a flat caul between the weight and the work so pressure spreads, and check that the weight is not sitting on a bulge that lifts everything else off. Weight is poor at closing a gap and excellent at holding a closed joint still.
6. A band, a strap or an inner tube
A ratcheting cargo strap is a band clamp. Wrap it around a carcass or a frame, put a scrap block at each corner so the strap does not crush the edges, and ratchet gently. A bicycle inner tube cut into a long spiral is the traditional version, and it applies gentle, even tension around curved or awkward shapes that no bar clamp can reach.
Be careful with ratchet straps specifically: they can apply far more force than any bar clamp you own, which makes it easy to distort an assembly. Snug, not tight.
7. The Spanish windlass
Loop rope or strong twine around the assembly, tie it off, then slip a stick through the loop and twist. Each turn shortens the loop and increases tension. Wedge the stick against the work to hold it.
It is medieval, it costs nothing, and it applies serious pressure around irregular shapes. Use blocks at the corners and stop twisting the moment the joints close.
8. Brads, pins and a temporary fastener
Two brad nails or pins hold parts in exact alignment while glue cures, then stay in place invisibly. This is the standard trick for small trim, boxes and anything where a clamp would slide the parts out of position as it tightens.
Without a nailer, a couple of fine panel pins tapped in by hand do the same job. Keep them well away from where a saw or router will later travel.
If you find yourself doing this often, an 18-gauge brad nailer makes it a one-second operation — though it is a convenience purchase rather than a first tool, and a pneumatic one needs a compressor you may not want.
9. Wedges and folding wedges inside the joint itself
Some joints clamp themselves. A wedged through-tenon is tightened by driving wedges into the end of the tenon after assembly; a dovetail cannot be pulled apart in the direction that matters; a rabbet or a dado holds its own alignment while the glue cures.

The habit that makes all of this easier
Dry fit everything, every time. Assemble the whole thing with no glue, with whatever clamping method you plan to use, and see what happens. You will find the joint that does not close, the clamp that has nowhere to sit, and the part you cut back to front — all while you still have unlimited time.
Glue-ups go wrong because they are timed. A dry fit turns a timed problem into an untimed one, and it costs five minutes. It is worth more than any clamp you could buy.
Frequently asked questions
What can I use instead of a bar clamp?
For a small box or a mitered frame, painter's tape used as a tension strap works genuinely well. For a panel glue-up, a pair of wedges driven between the workpiece and a fixed batten screwed to a board gives you real, adjustable pressure for the cost of two offcuts. For anything you can drill, a screw is a clamp that stays in place while the glue cures.
How much clamping pressure does wood glue actually need?
Less than most people apply. PVA needs enough pressure to close the joint completely and hold it still while it cures — not enough to squeeze the glue line dry. If the joint faces meet with no visible gap and a thin bead of squeeze-out appears along the line, you have enough. More pressure past that point makes the joint weaker, not stronger.
Can I use screws instead of clamps?
Yes, and it is the standard method for shop furniture and anything hidden. A screw applies clamping pressure exactly where you put it and does not need removing after the cure. The two caveats: drill a clearance hole in the top piece so it can be pulled tight, and remember that screws into end grain hold poorly, so the glue is still doing most of the structural work.
How long do I need to keep a glue joint clamped?
Long enough to reach handling strength, which for most yellow PVA at room temperature is around 30 minutes to an hour — check the bottle, because formulations differ. Full strength takes about 24 hours, and the joint should not be stressed before then. In a cold garage everything takes longer, and below the glue's minimum temperature it may never cure properly at all.
Is a rub joint really strong enough?
For an edge-to-edge glue joint in a narrow panel, yes — it is a traditional technique and the long-grain glue line ends up stronger than the wood. You spread glue on both edges, rub the boards together until the glue grabs, then leave them alone. It will not work on end grain, on wide panels that need alignment help, or if the edges are not already straight.
