How to choose a chisel set as a beginner

Start with a small set of common sizes rather than one expensive chisel or a giant kit you’ll never fully use. A 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 inchcovers the overwhelming majority of beginner cuts; a six-piece set just gives you a couple of extras. Look for a set whose handles can take a mallet (so you can chop, not just pare), and prioritize steel that is easy to sharpen — chrome-vanadium and chrome-manganese both fit the bill.

You will need to sharpen them — that’s normal

Every chisel arrives needing its back flattened and its edge honed. This is not a defect; it is how chisels are sold. It’s also the single most valuable skill a beginner can learn, because a keen edge is the difference between clean joinery and splintered frustration. Frequently asked questions

What size chisels does a beginner need?

A 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 inch will handle almost everything you do early on. A six-piece set (down to 1/8 and up to 1 or 1 1/2 inch) just adds convenience — you don't need a huge range to start.

Do cheap chisels work, or do I need expensive ones?

Cheap chisels sharpened well easily out-perform expensive chisels left dull. Budget sets use softer steel that dulls a little faster, so you re-hone more often — but for learning, that's a feature, not a flaw. Start cheap, learn to sharpen, upgrade later if you want to.

Why do new chisels need sharpening?

Chisels are sold ground but not finish-honed, and their backs usually need flattening. That's normal for every brand, budget or premium. Ten minutes of setup turns a rough edge into a keen one — it's a skill, not a chore to resent.

Can I hit a chisel with a regular hammer?

No — use a wooden or resin mallet. A steel hammer mushrooms the handle, damages the tool and gives you far less control over the cut. A basic wooden mallet costs very little and is the correct tool for chopping.
