How to Sharpen a Hand Plane Iron

A plane iron is not just a wide chisel. Camber, the chipbreaker and the ruler trick — the four things that make a plane sing, and the order to do them in.

Most people buy their first hand plane, run it down a board, get a torn scratchy mess and quietly conclude that hand planes are a mystery for people with more patience. Nearly always, the plane was fine. The iron was blunt out of the box — almost all of them are, including expensive ones — and nobody mentioned that sharpening it is a slightly different job from sharpening a chisel.

You can substitute wet-or-dry sandpaper stuck to glass for all of the stones — the “scary sharp” route works perfectly well and is cheaper still. The one item worth insisting on is the honing guide, for the reason in the next section. Our sharpening kit roundup compares the options in full.

Why a plane iron is not just a wide chisel

Width makes squareness matter

A 1-inch chisel honed slightly out of square still pares fine; you simply angle your hand. A 2-inch plane iron honed out of square is a real problem, because the iron sits in a fixed mouth and cannot be rotated. One corner projects further than the other, the plane takes a wedge-shaped shaving, and the board ends up with a step down one side that gets worse with every pass.

This is the strongest argument for a honing guide on a plane iron. Set the iron in the guide, check the edge is square to the guide body with a small square before you tighten it, and the guide holds that for you. Freehand sharpening a wide iron square is a skill; it is not a beginner skill.

The back is a bigger job

A plane iron has far more back to flatten than a chisel, and budget irons are frequently hollow in the middle or high at the corners. Lapping the entire back of a hollow iron flat on a stone can genuinely take an hour of unpleasant work.

The chipbreaker has to fit

A chisel has no equivalent. On a bevel-down bench plane, the chipbreaker (or cap iron) screws onto the back of the blade and its leading edge must meet the iron with no gap at all. Any gap is a slot that shavings pack into, and a plane that jams solid after three strokes is nearly always a chipbreaker problem rather than a sharpness problem.

The bevel angle can change how the plane cuts

On a normal bevel-down bench plane the iron sits bevel-down on a 45-degree frog, and the cutting angle is 45 degrees regardless of what you hone. On a bevel-up plane — most low-angle block planes and low-angle jacks — the iron sits bevel-up on a low bed, and the bed angle plus your bevel angle equals the cutting angle. The ruler trick

This is the single most useful thing on this page for anyone with a budget plane, and it turns the worst job in plane setup into a one-minute one.

The edge of a plane iron only needs the last few thousandths of an inch of its back to be polished. Everything behind that is doing nothing. So instead of lapping the whole back flat, lay a thin steel rule — a 6-inch engineer’s rule is ideal — along the far edge of your finest stone, rest the iron’s back on the rule with the cutting edge on the stone, and hone. The rule tips the iron by a degree or so, and you polish a very narrow back bevel right at the edge.

A degree of back bevel makes no practical difference to how a bench plane cuts, and it means a hollow, pitted or badly finished back never has to be lapped at all. Use the same rule on the same stone every time and the geometry repeats itself.

Two cautions. Do not use the ruler trick on a chisel — a chisel’s flat back is a reference surface you register against the work when paring, and a back bevel ruins that. And do not use it on a bevel-up plane, where a back bevel is subtracted from an already low cutting angle.

Angles, in plain numbers

  • Bevel-down bench plane (No. 3 to No. 7): hone about 25 degrees, with an optional secondary bevel a couple of degrees steeper. The cutting angle is set by the frog, so this is purely about edge durability.
  • Bevel-up plane, general work: about 25 degrees. On a typical 12-degree bed that gives a 37-degree cutting angle — low, keen, excellent on end grain.
  • Bevel-up plane, figured or difficult grain: 30 to 38 degrees. The higher cutting angle scrapes more than it slices and dramatically reduces tearout in wild grain.
  • A chipped or badly abused edge: regrind on the coarse stone until the damage is entirely gone before you start honing. Honing around a chip just polishes the chip.

Higher angles last longer and cut with more effort; lower angles slice more easily and dull sooner. There is no correct answer, only a trade you choose.

Camber: the curve nobody mentions

A plane iron sharpened dead straight, corner to corner, will leave tracks — fine parallel scored lines where the sharp corners of the iron dug in at the edges of the cut. It is the most common complaint from someone whose plane is otherwise working, and the fix is a deliberate, tiny curve across the edge called camber.

How much depends on the plane’s job:

  • Smoothing plane (No. 3, No. 4): almost straight. Take a few extra strokes with a fingertip pressing near each corner in turn on the fine stone. You want the corners relieved by an amount you can barely see, enough that they cannot score the surface.
  • Jack plane (No. 5) used for fast stock removal: a visible, shallow arc across the whole edge. It lets the plane take a thick shaving from the middle of the cut without the corners plowing in. This is the one case where a plainly curved iron is correct.
  • Jointer (No. 7, No. 8): straight, with only the very corners eased. A jointer’s job is to produce a flat edge, and a cambered iron cannot.
  • Block plane: straight, corners eased. It is used on end grain and small work where camber gains you nothing.

Camber is applied at the honing stage, not by grinding a curve first. Finger pressure at the corners during the last few passes on the fine stone is enough for a smoother; a jack takes more deliberate work.

Mating the chipbreaker

With the iron sharp, hold the chipbreaker against its back in the assembled position and look at the joint against a bright light. If you can see light anywhere along that line, shavings will get in.

The fix is quick. Hone the leading edge of the chipbreaker on the fine stone, held at a steep angle so you are working its front face, until it meets the iron along the full width with no light showing. Two minutes on a new budget plane; often already fine on a good one.

Then set how far back it sits. For general work, park the chipbreaker roughly 1/32 inch behind the cutting edge. Moving it very close to the edge — a few thousandths of an inch — makes the shaving bend sharply as it leaves the wood, and is a genuinely effective way of controlling tearout in awkward grain. Set it far back and the plane clogs less but tears more.

Putting it back together

Reassemble, then set the depth by feel rather than by eye:

  1. Fit the iron and chipbreaker, drop the lever cap on, and tighten it so the iron is held firmly but the depth adjuster still turns without force.
  2. Back the iron off until it takes no shaving at all, then advance it in small increments and take a test pass on a scrap after each one.
  3. Adjust the lateral lever until the shaving comes off the full width evenly. A shaving thick on one side means the iron is skewed, not blunt.
  4. Stop as soon as you get a continuous shaving. A properly set plane takes a fine, translucent, full-width shaving and the surface it leaves needs no sanding.

Diagnosing what went wrong

  • Fine parallel scored lines: plane tracks. The corners need easing — add camber.
  • Shaving thicker on one side: the iron is not square in the mouth. Nudge the lateral lever; if that does not fix it, the edge was honed out of square.
  • Plane jams solid after a few strokes: chipbreaker gap. Re-mate it.
  • Torn, fuzzy surface rather than scored lines: grain direction or cutting angle, not the edge. Try planing the other way along the board first; if that fails, close the chipbreaker up or hone a steeper bevel on a bevel-up plane.
  • Edge goes blunt within minutes: either the bevel angle is too low for the wood, or the iron is being pushed through a knot or into embedded grit. Check the board before blaming the steel.
  • Chatter, a rippled washboard surface: the lever cap is too loose, the iron is not bedded properly, or you are taking too heavy a cut.

How often, and the two-minute habit

Little and often, exactly as with a chisel. The moment a plane starts to need pushing rather than gliding, take the iron out and give it a dozen strokes on the fine stone and a few on the strop. That takes two minutes and does not require touching the coarse grit or resetting the angle in the guide.

Work that way and you will visit the coarse stone perhaps twice a year, when something has gone genuinely wrong. Wait until the plane is useless and every sharpening becomes a full session — which is precisely why the plane ends up on a shelf. A sharp plane is one of the most satisfying tools in a shop; a blunt one is a boat anchor, and there is only ever two minutes between them.

Frequently asked questions

Is sharpening a plane iron different from sharpening a chisel?

The honing motion is identical, but four things differ. The iron is far wider, so keeping the edge square in the guide matters much more. Most bench plane irons want a slight camber rather than a dead-straight edge. The chipbreaker has to mate perfectly against the back of the iron or shavings jam. And on a bevel-up plane, the bevel angle you hone also sets the cutting angle, so it changes how the plane behaves in difficult grain.

What angle should I sharpen a plane iron to?

For a standard bevel-down bench plane — a No. 4, No. 5 or similar — around 25 degrees, with an optional secondary bevel a couple of degrees steeper. On a bevel-up plane such as a low-angle block plane, the bevel adds to the bed angle to give the cutting angle, so around 25 degrees is a good general setting, 30 to 35 helps in figured wood, and lower angles suit end grain.

What is the ruler trick?

A shortcut for flattening the back of an iron. Instead of lapping the whole back flat, you lay a thin steel rule along the far edge of your finest stone and hone the iron's back while it rests on the rule. That polishes a very narrow back bevel of a degree or so right at the cutting edge, which is all the edge actually needs. It takes a minute rather than an hour and is ideal for a budget iron with a hollow back. Do not use it on a chisel, where the flat back is a reference surface for paring.

Should a plane iron be perfectly straight or curved?

It depends on the plane's job. A jack plane used for fast stock removal wants a pronounced curve so it takes a thick shaving without the corners digging in. A smoothing plane wants an almost straight edge with just the corners eased so it cannot leave tracks. A jointer iron stays straight so it can produce a flat edge, with only the very corners relieved.

Why does my plane leave lines in the board?

Those are plane tracks, and they are almost always the sharp corners of the iron digging in because the edge is dead straight and set slightly deep. Ease the corners with a few extra strokes under finger pressure at each end of the edge on the fine stone. If the lines are torn rather than scored, the problem is grain direction or a chipbreaker set too far back, not the sharpening.
