How to Use a Hand Plane
Grip, stance, depth of cut and grain direction — the six things that turn a plane from a frustrating scraper into the tool that fixes everything.

The hand plane has a worse reputation than it deserves, and the reason is almost always the first ten minutes. Somebody picks one up, pushes it along a board, gets either nothing at all or a torn strip of fibers, and concludes that hand planes are a mysterious art requiring a decade of practice.
They are not. A plane is a chisel held at a fixed angle and depth by a jig, and there are exactly six things you have to get right. Get all six and it works immediately. Get five and it feels broken. This page is those six things, in the order they matter.
First: the plane must be sharp, and this is not negotiable
Everything below assumes a sharp iron. A dull plane cannot be adjusted into working — it can only be pressed harder, which makes the surface worse. The test is simple: the iron should shave a curl from the end grain of a scrap under its own weight and your hand.
Roughly nine out of ten “my plane does not work” problems are a dull edge wearing a disguise.
1. Set the blade by feel, not by eye alone
Wind the depth adjuster until the blade is fully retracted and cuts nothing. Then turn it forward in small increments while sighting down the sole from the front, toward a light. You are looking for a fine dark line to appear evenly across the mouth — that is the edge, and it should project by about the thickness of a hair.
Then run your fingertips across the sole in front of the mouth. You will feel the edge before you can reliably see it. If one side catches your finger and the other does not, the blade is tilted.
2. Square the blade with the lateral lever
The lever behind the blade tilts it side to side. Sight down the sole toward a light source and move the lever until the projecting edge sits parallel with the sole. A blade that projects more on one side takes a wedge-shaped shaving, which is why so many beginner edges end up out of square without anyone knowing why.
Check this after every sharpening and after any knock. It shifts more easily than you would expect.
3. Hold the work still, properly
A plane pushes hard. If the board slides, all the effort goes into the board moving instead of the shaving coming off, and the stroke becomes a wrestle.
For face work, a planing stop or a pair of bench dogs is faster than clamps because there is nothing to release between boards. For edge work you want the board held on edge in a vise with only an inch or two protruding, or the whole thing flexes and the edge comes out hollow. 4. Read the grain before the first stroke
This is the one that separates a torn surface from a glassy one, and it takes two seconds.
Look at the edge of the board, not the face. The grain lines run at a slight angle, rising toward one end. You want to plane downhill — in the direction where the fibers lie down into the surface ahead of the edge rather than lifting out of it.
Plane uphill and the iron gets underneath the fibers, levers them up and splits them out ahead of the cut. That is tearout, and no amount of sharpening prevents it if you are going the wrong way. If you are unsure, take one light stroke: a clean shaving means you guessed right, a rough patch means turn the board around.
Some boards, especially figured ones, reverse grain halfway along. When that happens, take a much finer cut, work from both ends toward the middle, or stop and finish the surface with a card scraper, which is largely immune to grain direction.
5. Stance and stroke: drive with your legs
Stand alongside the bench with your feet apart along the board’s length, back foot planted, front foot forward. The stroke is a weight shift from the back leg to the front, not an arm push. You will get a longer, more even stroke and stop being tired after ten minutes.
The pressure changes through the stroke, and this is the detail nobody mentions:
- At the start — push down on the front knob. The plane is mostly hanging off the front of the board and will nose-dive otherwise.
- Through the middle — even pressure on both hands.
- At the end — shift pressure to the rear tote. The plane is now mostly hanging off the back, and pushing on the front knob rounds the far end of the board over.
Ignore this and you will produce a board that is thinner at both ends than in the middle, then spend an hour wondering why it will not sit flat.
6. Read the shaving
The shaving is a diagnostic readout, and it tells you more than the surface does.
- Full-width, continuous, translucent — everything is right. Keep going.
- Only from one side — blade is tilted. Lateral lever.
- Dust instead of shavings — the iron is dull, or you are planing end grain with a blade set too deep.
- Thick and hard to push — back the depth off. A plane should not be a workout.
- Torn and broken — wrong grain direction, or the cut is too heavy for that board.
- Nothing at all after several strokes — blade not projecting, or the surface is already lower than the plane can reach, which happens in the middle of a hollow board.
What each plane is actually for
A beginner rarely needs more than two, and they do different jobs. Our hand plane roundup makes the full case; briefly:

- Smoothing plane (No. 4) — two-handed, for taking a board from “sanded” to “polished” in a few strokes, and for flattening small panels.

Three jobs worth practicing this week
- Ease an edge. Two or three light strokes at 45 degrees along a sharp corner. It takes ten seconds and makes any project instantly feel finished rather than cut.
- Trim end grain. Set the block plane very fine, and work from each end toward the middle so you never blow out the far corner. Nothing else cleans up a slightly-off crosscut so quickly.
- Straighten an edge for a glue-up. Plane until the shaving runs the full length of the board in one piece. That single test tells you the edge is straight better than any straightedge.

The honest summary
Sharp iron, fine even projection, work held still, planing downhill, weight through your legs, and a shaving you actually look at. Six things. Everything else — the frog position, the chipbreaker gap, the mouth opening — is refinement that matters once those six are automatic and is a distraction before then.
When it clicks, it clicks completely. A single pass with a sharp plane leaves a surface no sandpaper can match, and it takes about four seconds. That is why a tool this old is still in every serious shop.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my hand plane not cut anything?
Almost always because the blade is not projecting far enough, or the iron is dull. Retract the blade fully, then advance it in small increments while sighting down the sole toward a light — you are looking for a hair-thin dark line appearing evenly across the mouth. If the blade is clearly projecting and it still will not cut, the edge is dull and no adjustment will fix that.
Why is my hand plane tearing the wood?
You are planing against the grain — uphill into the rising fibers, which lifts and splits them ahead of the edge. Turn the board around and plane the other way. If tearout continues in both directions, the grain reverses in the board: take a much finer cut, close the mouth if your plane allows it, or finish with a card scraper.
How thick should a plane shaving be?
For general work, thin enough to see light through and thick enough to hold together — roughly the thickness of a sheet of paper. For final smoothing, thinner. For fast stock removal, thicker, and accept a rougher surface. If the plane is hard to push, the shaving is too thick, not the wood too hard.
Should I push a hand plane with my arms or my body?
Your body. Stand with your feet apart along the length of the board, back foot planted, and drive the stroke by shifting weight forward from your legs. Planing with your arms is exhausting and produces a stroke that speeds up and slows down, which shows in the surface.
Do I need to wax the sole of my plane?
It is not required, but it makes a surprising difference. A wipe of paste wax on the sole cuts friction noticeably, which makes a fine cut easier to feel and a long stroke less tiring. It also keeps rust off the sole between sessions, which matters in a garage.
