Tooth count, in plain English
The single number on the box that matters most, and the one nobody explains. Here is the whole logic.
Every tooth takes a bite and has to carry that bite out of the cut in the gullet in front of it. Ripping — cutting along the grain, usually through thick stock — produces long stringy chips and a lot of them, so you need few teeth with big gullets. Crosscutting — across the grain, usually through thinner stock — produces almost no waste but wants many fine teeth severing fibers cleanly so the edge does not tear.
40–50 teeth (10 in) — general purpose. The one-blade answer.
60–80 teeth (10 in) — crosscuts, plywood, melamine, trim. Will burn on deep rips.
24 teeth (7-1/4 in) — the framing blade that came with your circular saw.
40–60 teeth (7-1/4 in) — what you should actually be cutting sheet goods with.
The reason a 80-tooth blade burns on a deep rip is not that it is “too fine” in some abstract sense. It is that eighty small gullets cannot carry away the volume of chips a two-inch-deep rip produces, so the waste packs in, friction rises and the wood scorches.
Grind: the tooth shapes worth knowing
ATB (alternate top bevel) — teeth angled alternately left and right, so each acts like a little knife severing fibers. The crosscut and plywood grind.
FTG (flat top grind) — square-topped teeth that chisel waste out along the grain. The rip grind.
Combination — groups of ATB teeth with an FTG raker between them. Does both jobs at maybe 85 percent of a dedicated blade’s quality.
TCG (triple chip grind) — alternating flat and chamfered teeth, built for melamine, laminate and non-ferrous metal. Overkill for wood.
Thin kerf: yes for a beginner, with one caveat
Kerf is how wide a slot the blade cuts. A thin-kerf blade removes less material, which means less work for the motor — genuinely useful on a portable saw running from a household outlet, and doubly so if you are reaching for it through a long extension cord.
The caveat is that a thinner plate is less rigid and can deflect slightly in a heavy cut, and on some saws a thin-kerf blade is too narrow for the factory riving knife. Check that the riving knife is thinner than the kerf before you fit one; if it is not, use a full-kerf blade. Never remove the riving knife to make a blade fit.
Getting the fit right
Two numbers, both on the blade and both in your manual.
Diameter. Use exactly what the saw is rated for. A smaller blade loses depth of cut and may not clear the guard; a larger one will not fit and will over-speed at the rim.
Arbor. 5/8 in is standard for 10 in and 7-1/4 in saws in the US, but not universal — some cordless and metric saws differ. Do not use a reducing bushing unless the saw manual specifically permits it.
Also check the maximum RPM stamped on the blade against your saw’s speed. This matters most on smaller-diameter blades fitted to fast tools.
Circular saw — a 40 tooth finish blade, immediately. This is the cheapest meaningful upgrade in this whole article, and it is what makes cutting plywood with a circular saw actually work.
Miter saw — 60 to 80 teeth. A miter saw only crosscuts, so there is no compromise to make. Pair it with the miter saw picks.
Clean the pitch off. A blade that seems dull is usually just coated in resin, which increases friction and causes burning. Soak it in a purpose-made blade cleaner or a simple household degreaser, brush it with a stiff nylon brush, dry it fully, done.
Never let a blade sit face-down on concrete. Carbide teeth are brittle and chip on impact. Store blades hanging, in their sleeves, or between sheets of cardboard.
Let the saw reach full speed before the cut. Starting a cut against a slow blade loads the teeth badly and is also the main cause of kickback on a table saw.
The one to buy first
If you own a circular saw and nothing else, buy the 7-1/4 inch 40-tooth finish blade. It costs about as much as a takeaway, it takes two minutes to fit, and the improvement in cut quality is more dramatic than any other purchase available to you at that price.
If you own a 10 inch table saw or miter saw, buy the 50-tooth combination blade and use it for everything until a specific job tells you what it is missing. That is a much better way to discover your second blade than guessing now.
Frequently asked questions
How many teeth should a saw blade have for cutting plywood?+
As many as your saw can pull without bogging. On a 10 inch table saw or miter saw that means 60 to 80 teeth; on a 7-1/4 inch circular saw, 40 to 60. Plywood tears because each tooth lifts the thin face veneer, so more teeth taking smaller bites means less tearout.
Is a more expensive saw blade actually worth it?+
Up to a point, clearly yes. The jump from a bundled no-name blade to a mid-priced branded one is dramatic, and it costs less than the wood you will ruin without it. The jump from mid-priced to industrial is much smaller for a hobby shop, and mostly buys longer edge life rather than a better cut on day one.
Why does my saw burn the wood?+
Four common causes, in order of likelihood: pitch build-up on the blade, too many teeth for the depth of cut, feeding too slowly so the blade rubs instead of cutting, and a fence not parallel to the blade so the wood binds behind the cut. Clean the blade first — it is free and it is usually the answer.
Can I use a circular saw blade in a table saw?+
Only if the diameter, arbor size and maximum RPM all match your table saw's specification. Many 7-1/4 inch blades are designed for higher speeds than a 10 inch table saw runs at, and a 7-1/4 inch blade in a 10 inch saw loses a lot of depth of cut. Check both manuals and do not improvise with bushings.
Do thin kerf blades make a real difference?+
On an underpowered saw, yes — less material removed means less load on the motor, so cuts stall less and the saw runs cooler. On a full-size cabinet saw the difference is marginal. The important check is that your riving knife is thinner than the blade's kerf, otherwise the blade cannot be used safely.
How do I know when a blade needs replacing?+
Clean it first — most dull-seeming blades are just gummed with resin. If a clean blade still burns, needs noticeably more feed pressure, or leaves a rougher cut than it used to, the carbide is worn. Also replace immediately if any tooth is chipped or missing, because the blade is then unbalanced.
