Sanding is the part of woodworking nobody photographs and everybody underestimates. It is also where most first projects are quietly lost: not by a bad joint, but by a surface that was sanded with the wrong grit, in the wrong order, with worn abrasive, and then finished — at which point every mistake becomes permanent and obvious.
The good news is that the whole subject is simpler than the sandpaper aisle suggests. Here is what we compare on. Abrasive quality— premium grains keep cutting long after budget paper has glazed over, and glazed paper does not “sand more gently”, it burnishes. Backing and hole pattern, because the wrong disc pattern blocks your sander’s dust extraction completely. Grit range— whether one purchase gives you a usable progression. Whether it suits flat, curved or detail work, since those want genuinely different products. And cost per usable disc, which is not the same as cost per disc.
One honest thing up front: no abrasive fixes a surface that has a problem. Sanding removes scratches by replacing them with finer scratches. If the surface has a dent, a gouge or a glue smear, sanding harder just makes a dished, glue-sealed patch.

Worth knowing. Sanding a flat panel with your bare hand rounds every edge and dishes every soft grain line, because your fingers press hardest where the wood is softest. A block is a two-dollar fix for a problem most beginners never diagnose.

What the numbers mean
The grit number is roughly the number of abrasive particles per linear inch of the screen used to sort them. Higher number, smaller particles, finer scratches. That is the whole system.
60–80 grit — shaping and stock removal. Leveling a glue-up, removing mill marks, taking material off fast. Leaves deep scratches you must then remove.
100–120 grit — the workhorse. Removes 80-grit scratches and produces a surface that is genuinely usable. Most projects start here if the wood is already reasonably flat.
150–180 grit — where most projects should stop. Fine enough for a good finish on most species, and it still leaves enough tooth for stain and oil to grip.
220 grit — the practical ceiling for bare wood. Worth it before a film finish like polyurethane. Beyond this, on most species, you are polishing rather than sanding.
320+ — between coats of finish only. A light pass between coats knocks down dust nibs. Not for bare wood.
The progression rule
Never skip more than one grit step.Going 80 to 220 in one jump looks efficient and does not work: the 220 paper cannot remove 80-grit scratches, so you end up with a smooth surface that still has deep gouges in it, invisible until finish goes on. A sane progression is 80 → 120 → 180, or 100 → 150 → 220.
At each grit, sand until the scratches from the previousgrit are gone — that is the only thing each pass is for. A pencil trick makes this visible: scribble lightly across the surface before each grit, and sand until the pencil marks have all disappeared. When they are gone, the previous scratches are gone too.
How high should you actually go?
Higher is not better, and this surprises people. Sanding past about 180 to 220 on bare wood closes the pores, and a closed surface accepts stain and oil lessreadily — which produces a patchy, pale result. It also takes ages.
Practical guidance: stop at 150–180 for oil finishes and stains, and 180–220 before a film finish like polyurethane. Our wood finishes guide covers which is which.
Machine sanding versus hand sanding
A random orbital sander does the volume work: it removes material fast and leaves a pattern of fine random swirls rather than straight lines. What it cannot do is inside corners, tight profiles, or the final pass.
Always finish by hand, along the grain. A random orbital leaves faint circular scratches that are essentially invisible on bare wood and become obvious the moment finish goes on, because the finish sits in them differently. One light hand pass with the same grit, following the grain, removes them.
Discs, sheets, sponges and blocks
Hook-and-loop discsfor the power sander. Check the hole count — 5-inch discs come in 5-hole and 8-hole patterns and they are not interchangeable. The wrong pattern blocks dust extraction, which matters for your lungs and for how long the disc lasts.

Spongesfor curves, round-overs and moldings — they follow a profile where flat paper cannot. Their softness is also why they are wrong on a flat panel.
A block for anything flat. Fingers press hardest where the wood is softest, so bare-hand sanding dishes soft grain lines and rounds every edge you wanted crisp. A cork block is a two-dollar fix.
Dust: the part that matters most
Sanding produces the finest dust in the entire shop, and fine dust is the fraction that reaches deep into the lungs and stays airborne for hours. It is also the job that feels gentlest, which is exactly why people skip protection for it.

Two habits that save projects
Check with raking light before you finish.Set a lamp low and shine it across the surface — scratches, glue residue and missed spots that overhead light hides completely appear as long shadows. Our shop lighting guide covers the technique.
Remove dried glue before sanding, not with sanding.Glue seals the wood; sanded-over glue smears into the grain and shows as a pale patch under finish. Pare it off with a sharp chisel or a scraper first — see our wood glue guide.
Frequently asked questions
What grits do I actually need for woodworking?+
Three cover almost everything: 80 for stock removal and leveling, 120 as the workhorse, and 180 as the finishing grit. Add 220 if you use film finishes like polyurethane, and 320 for light sanding between coats of finish. Everything else is a specialist need.
Can I skip grits when sanding?+
You can skip one step, not more. Each grit exists to remove the scratches left by the previous one, and 220 paper physically cannot remove 80-grit scratches. Jumping from 80 straight to 220 gives you a smooth-feeling surface with deep gouges still in it — invisible until finish goes on.
How high a grit should I sand to before finishing?+
Stop around 150 to 180 for oil finishes and stains, and 180 to 220 before a film finish. Sanding higher closes the wood's pores so it absorbs stain and oil less readily, which produces a pale, patchy result. Higher is not better on bare wood.
Why do my sanding discs clog so fast?+
Usually resinous wood, sanding a finish that has not fully cured, or no dust extraction. Pine and cedar load abrasive quickly. Connecting the sander to a shop vacuum makes a large difference to disc life because it clears dust before it packs into the grain.
Do 5-inch sanding discs all fit the same sander?+
No — check the hole pattern as well as the diameter. Five-inch discs are commonly sold in 5-hole and 8-hole patterns, and using the wrong one blocks the sander's dust extraction entirely. Look at your sander's pad and count the holes before ordering.
