Wood Glue Explained

PVA, polyurethane, epoxy, hide glue — which one a beginner needs, how long to clamp, and why your glue joint is already stronger than the wood around it.

Glue is the least glamorous item in a workshop and one of the most consequential. It is also the subject of more confident misinformation than almost anything else — a shelf of bottles, a wall of claims, and no explanation of which one a beginner actually needs.

Here is the short version, and then the detail. Buy one bottle of yellow PVA wood glue. It will handle essentially everything you build indoors for years. Everything below explains when that answer changes and why.

The types, and when each one matters

PVA — yellow wood glue (buy this)

Polyvinyl acetate. The yellow (or sometimes white) glue that is the default in every wood shop on earth. It is water-based, cleans up with water before it cures, is non-toxic, dries to a light amber color, and produces a long-grain joint stronger than the wood around it.

PVA wood glues are commonly sold in three water-resistance grades, usually labeled by type:

  • Interior (Type I in the usual labeling). The standard yellow glue. Not water-resistant. Correct for furniture, boxes, shelves and everything else that stays indoors.
  • Water-resistant (Type II). Survives moisture exposure. The sensible choice for outdoor furniture, planters and anything in a damp garage or bathroom.
  • Waterproof (Type III). For genuinely submerged or continuously wet applications. Rarely needed by a beginner, and more expensive.

Read the specific bottle rather than trusting a color. Manufacturers use their own naming, and the water-resistance rating is printed on the label.

Polyurethane glue — the foaming one

Cures by reacting with moisture and expands as it does, foaming out of the joint. It bonds dissimilar materials well — wood to metal, wood to stone — and is genuinely waterproof.

The expansion is a trap for beginners. Foam is not strength; it fills gaps with something structurally useless, and it will actively push a loose joint apart if you have not clamped it firmly. It also stains skin brown for days and does not wash off. Useful, occasionally. Not a first bottle.

Epoxy — for gaps and for metal

Two parts, mixed. Epoxy is the only adhesive here that genuinely fills a gap with something strong, which makes it the right answer for a loose joint, for bonding hardware into wood, and for outdoor work that must not move. It is expensive, it has a working time you must respect, and mixing ratios matter.

Hide glue — traditional, and quietly useful

Animal-protein glue, used for centuries and still made in both hot-pot and liquid bottled forms. Its unusual property is reversibility: a hide-glue joint can be released with heat and moisture, which is why antique furniture can be repaired and modern PVA furniture often cannot. It also does not interfere with finishes the way PVA squeeze-out does.

CA glue — superglue, for small fixes

Cyanoacrylate. Sets in seconds, brittle when cured, and not a structural woodworking adhesive. It is superb for tacking a small part in place, fixing a chipped edge or stabilizing a crack while you work. Every shop ends up with a bottle, and none of them use it for joints.

The two words that confuse everyone: open time and clamp time

Open time is how long you have between spreading glue and getting the joint closed. Once it is exceeded, the glue has begun to skin over and the joint will be weak even if it looks perfect. This is the reason a complicated glue-up goes wrong: not skill, just running out of open time halfway through fitting the fourth piece.

Clamp time is how long the clamps must stay on, which is different from and much shorter than cure time— the point at which the joint reaches full strength. Typical PVA guidance is on the order of half an hour to an hour in clamps and about a day to full strength, but exact figures vary by product and are printed on the bottle. Cold and damp both slow everything down.

The practical consequence: you can unclamp and move on to another part of the project after clamp time, but do not plane, sand, stress or hang weight on that joint until it has fully cured.

Do a dry run. Always.

Assemble the entire thing with clamps and no glue first. Check that everything fits, that the assembly comes out square, that your clamps are long enough and that you have enough of them, and that the clamps are already open to roughly the right width and within arm’s reach.

When the answer is “more than I am going to buy,” two brads hold parts in position while the glue cures and the clamps you do own go somewhere else. A brad nailer is the fast version of that trick — but brads supply position, not pressure, so the glue is still doing all the structural work.

How much glue, and how much pressure

Spread a thin, even film on both mating surfaces. Both is the part people skip. Too little glue starves the joint; too much does not make it stronger, it just makes a mess and can hydraulically resist closing the joint.

Clamp pressure should be firm and even, not maximal. You want a continuous fine bead of squeeze-out along the joint — that tells you the glue reached everywhere. Cranking harder than that squeezes glue out of the joint and crushes wood fibers, which is a real, if unusual, way to weaken a joint.

Squeeze-out: the mistake that shows up weeks later

This is the single most common first-project disaster, and it does not appear until you apply finish. Glue that has soaked into the surface seals the wood so it cannot absorb stain or oil, and the result is pale patches around every joint — permanent, and only visible after the finish goes on.

Wiping wet glue with a damp cloth makes it worse: you spread a thin invisible film over a wide area instead of removing it. The reliable method is to wait until the squeeze-out gels— rubbery, no longer wet, typically twenty to forty minutes — and then pare it away cleanly with a sharp chisel held flat, or a card scraper. It comes off in one piece and leaves clean wood.

Before finishing, check every joint with raking light. Dried glue shows as a slightly different sheen, and that is your last chance to remove it.

Why glue joints actually fail

  • End grain.The end of a board is a bundle of open straws; glue soaks in and there is little surface for it to grab. End-grain butt joints are weak, full stop. That is why joinery — dovetails, mortises, dowels, pocket screws — exists: to convert an end-grain problem into a long-grain glue surface plus mechanical interlock.
  • Gaps. PVA is not a gap filler. A joint that does not close cleanly will be weak no matter how much glue you use. Fix the fit, or switch to epoxy.
  • Exceeded open time. Skinned-over glue makes a joint that looks right and is not.
  • Oily or very dense species. Some tropical hardwoods resist PVA because of natural oils. Wipe the surfaces with a solvent immediately before gluing, or use epoxy.
  • Cold. Most PVA has a minimum application temperature. Gluing in an unheated garage in winter can produce a chalky, weak bond.

Storing it

Keep the cap clean, keep the bottle upright, and do not let it freeze. PVA that has frozen and thawed can be permanently damaged while still looking usable, so an unheated garage in a cold climate is the wrong place for it. If glue has gone stringy, lumpy or sour, throw it out. A bottle of glue is one of the cheapest things in the shop, and it is holding together everything you have built.

What wood glue should a beginner buy?

One bottle of yellow PVA wood glue — the standard interior type. It covers essentially every indoor project, cleans up with water before it cures, is inexpensive, and is stronger than the wood it joins. Buy a water-resistant version if anything you build will live outdoors.

How long do I need to clamp a glue joint?

Read the bottle, because products differ. As a general pattern, standard PVA needs around 30 minutes to an hour of clamping to hold together, and around 24 hours before the joint reaches full strength and can be stressed. Take the clamps off early and the joint can creep; stress it early and it can fail even though it feels solid.

Is a glue joint stronger than the wood?

For long grain to long grain — edge-gluing boards into a panel, for instance — yes. A properly made PVA joint in that orientation is stronger than the surrounding wood, and a test piece will break beside the glue line rather than along it. End grain is a completely different story and glues poorly.

Should I wipe off the squeeze-out or let it dry?

Neither extreme works well. Wiping wet glue with a damp cloth smears it into the grain, where it seals the surface and shows up as a pale patch under finish. The reliable method is to let the squeeze-out gel to a rubbery consistency — usually 20 to 40 minutes — then pare it off cleanly with a chisel or a scraper.

Does wood glue expire?

Yes. PVA has a real shelf life and degrades faster if it has been frozen — a bottle that has frozen and thawed may look fine and be stringy, lumpy or simply weak. If glue has changed texture or smells sour, replace it. A new bottle costs far less than a failed project.
