Drill vs Impact Driver: Which Do You Actually Need?
They look almost identical, cost about the same, and do genuinely different jobs. Which one a beginner should buy first, and when the second one earns its place.

In the tool aisle they sit next to each other, the same color, the same battery, roughly the same price, both described as “driver” something. One of them can do a job the other genuinely cannot, and the marketing on the box will not tell you which. Here is the difference in plain English, and which one belongs in a first woodworking shop.
The one-sentence version
A drill/driver bores holes and drives screws with control. An impact driver only drives screws, but drives them with far more force and far less strain on your wrist. If you can own one, own the drill.
What a drill/driver actually is
A drill applies smooth, continuous rotation. Two features define it:
- A three-jaw keyless chuckthat grips any round or hex shank, in any size up to about half an inch. This is why a drill can use brad point bits, Forstner bits, hole saws, countersinks and sanding drums — essentially every accessory made. See our drill bit guide for the ones that matter.
- A clutch— the numbered ring behind the chuck. Set it to 6 and the drill stops turning when it reaches that much resistance, so the screw head stops flush instead of sinking through the surface. This is the feature that makes a drill safe for cabinet hardware, hinges and small screws.
Drills also have low-speed control that an impact driver lacks. At a slow, steady speed you can start a hole exactly on your mark and feel the material as you go — which is the whole game with a Forstner bit or a large hole saw.
What an impact driver actually is
An impact driver rotates, and when it meets resistance it adds rapid rotational hammer blows — thousands of tiny sideways impacts per minute delivered through the drive. That produces two effects that matter:
- Enormous turning force from a small tool. A three-inch structural screw that stalls a drill goes in without complaint.
- Almost no reaction torque in your wrist. When a drill binds, the tool tries to twist out of your hands. An impact driver puts the force into the fastener in pulses, so your wrist barely feels it. Anyone who has driven a hundred deck screws understands why this matters.
The limitations follow directly. It has a 1/4-inch hex socket, not a chuck, so it only accepts hex-shank bits — most woodworking drill bits are round-shank and will not fit. And it has no clutch, so nothing stops it except your finger on the trigger. It is also significantly louder, in a rattling way that carries through a shared garage wall at nine in the evening.
Which does what, honestly
Boring holes
Drill, decisively. Brad point bits, Forstner bits and countersinks are mostly round-shank and cannot be held by an impact driver at all. Even with a hex-shank bit, the lack of low-speed control makes clean holes hard.
Driving cabinet screws, hinges and small hardware
Drill. The clutch is the reason. An impact driver will drive a #6 screw through a cabinet door before you have registered what happened, and it will shear the head off a small brass screw effortlessly.
Driving long screws, lag bolts, structural fasteners
Impact driver, easily. Building a workbench, a shed, an outdoor bench or anything assembled with three-inch screws is the job this tool exists for. A drill will do it and will fight you the whole way.
Pocket-hole joinery
Either, with a caution. Pocket screws are long and coarse, which suits an impact driver — but they also pull two boards together and an impact driver will keep pulling long after the joint has closed, cracking the workpiece. If you use an impact driver here, ease off the trigger early.
Mixing, sanding drums, wire brushes
Drill only. These accessories are round-shank and need controlled continuous rotation.
So which do you buy first?
The drill, and it is not close. A first woodworking shop bores far more holes than it drives structural screws, and the drill can do both jobs while an impact driver can only do one. Buy the impact driver when a specific job makes you want it — usually the first time you build something structural and spend an evening fighting a drill that keeps stalling and twisting. That is a real signal. Buying it beforehand, on the reasoning that more power is better, is how it ends up in a drawer.
The combo kit exception
There is one case where buying both at once is the right financial call. Because batteries and a charger dominate the price of a cordless purchase, a drill-plus-impact-driver combo kit with two batteries often costs only slightly more than the same drill bought as a kit on its own. If you have already settled on a platform, check the combo price before buying the drill alone — the second tool is frequently close to free.
What is not good value is a five-tool combo bundle bought to save money. You will end up with a reciprocating saw and a work light you did not want, on batteries that are usually the smallest capacity the brand sells. Our list of tools to delay covers the same trap in other categories.
Two habits that save fasteners
Whichever tool you use, drill a pilot hole near the end of a board. Wood splits because a screw is a wedge, and a tapered countersink bit removes exactly the material the shank will occupy. And use the right driver bit, fully seated: most stripped screw heads are caused by a worn or wrong-size bit rocking in the recess, not by too much power.
One safety note. Power tools deserve respect, not fear. Read the manual, keep the guards on, wear ANSI-rated eye protection every time, and never rush a cut. When something feels wrong, stop and reset — there is no deadline in a home shop.
Frequently asked questions
Should a beginner buy a drill or an impact driver first?
A drill/driver. It does both jobs adequately — it bores holes, which an impact driver cannot do well, and it drives screws, which an impact driver does better. A shop with one cordless tool should have a drill. An impact driver is the second purchase, not the first.
What is the actual difference between them?
A drill applies smooth continuous rotation and has a clutch that stops it when a set torque is reached. An impact driver applies rotation plus rapid rotational hammer blows, which delivers far more turning force in short bursts and almost eliminates the twisting reaction in your wrist. A drill has a three-jaw chuck that takes any round bit; an impact driver has a 1/4-inch hex socket that only takes hex-shank bits.
Can an impact driver drill holes?
It can spin a hex-shank drill bit, and for rough holes in construction lumber it works. But it has no clutch, no variable precision at low speed, and cannot hold a round-shank bit at all — so brad point bits, Forstner bits and most bit sets are simply not usable. For clean holes in a woodworking project, use a drill.
Is an impact driver too powerful for woodworking?
It can be. Without a clutch, an impact driver will happily drive a screw head straight through plywood or snap a small brass screw. It is superb for long structural screws and terrible for delicate hardware. Trigger control is the only brake you have.
Are combo kits worth buying?
Often yes. A drill-plus-impact-driver kit with two batteries and a charger usually costs little more than the drill bought with batteries alone, because the batteries dominate the price. If the platform is one you want to stay on, a combo kit is normally the best value in the aisle.
