It is where a good project becomes a nice one, it is roughly a third of the total time on most beginner builds, and doing it by hand is genuinely miserable. A random orbital sander is the tool that gives you those hours back. It is usually the second power tool a beginner should own, right after the cordless drill.

Why “random orbital” matters
A plain palm sander (sometimes called a sheet or finishing sander) vibrates the pad in a small fixed orbit. Because the pattern repeats, every scratch lands in roughly the same place, and the result is a faint swirl you only notice after you apply finish — which is the worst possible moment.
A random orbital sander spins the pad and oscillates it on an offset at the same time. The abrasive never repeats its path, so there is no consistent scratch pattern to see. That is the entire reason this is the sander type recommended for finish work, and it is why the extra money over a $25 sheet sander is worth spending.
The grit sequence that actually works
Beginners waste enormous time here, usually by starting too fine and then skipping grits.
Start at the coarsest grit you need — and no coarser
If the surface is already reasonably flat, start at 120. If it has mill marks, glue squeeze-out or a rough edge, start at 80. Starting coarser than necessary just creates deep scratches you then have to remove.
Never skip more than one grit step
Going 80 to 220 does not work: the 220 paper cannot remove 80-grit scratches in any reasonable time, so you sand for ten minutes and the scratches are still there under the finish. Go 80, 120, 180, 220. Each grit’s only job is to remove the previous grit’s scratches.
Stop at 180 or 220
For most finishes there is nothing to gain past 220 and something to lose — a surface burnished too fine can stop absorbing stain evenly, giving a blotchy result. Sand to 180 for painted work, 220 for clear-finished work, and stop.
The two mistakes that cause swirl marks
Pressing down.A random orbital sander cuts by letting the pad float and orbit freely. Pressure stalls the orbit, so the pad starts behaving like a fixed disc sander — and it leaves circular marks. Let the tool’s own weight do the work and simply guide it.
Moving too fast.The pad needs time to complete its random pattern. Move at roughly an inch per second — far slower than instinct suggests — with plenty of overlap between passes.
A third, sneakier cause: a worn-out or clogged disc. Once the abrasive loads up with resin it stops cutting and starts burnishing. Discs are cheap; change them far more often than feels necessary.
Dust is the real safety issue
A circular saw makes chips you can see and sweep. A sander makes fine particulate that hangs in the air for hours and goes deep into your lungs. This is the reason dust collection sits at the top of our comparison criteria rather than the bottom.
Do two things. Attach the sander to a shop vacuum when you can — every sander here has a port, and it transforms the result. And wear a rated respirator, not a cloth mask; the picks in our safety gear guide cost less than a pack of sanding discs.

Do I need to connect my sander to a vacuum?+
It makes a large difference. The onboard bag or canister catches some dust, but a shop vacuum on the port captures far more, keeps the abrasive clear so it cuts better, and keeps fine particulate out of the air you are breathing. A cyclone separator between the two stops the vacuum filter clogging.
Is a cordless sander worth it?+
Only for convenience or working away from an outlet. Sanding draws power continuously, unlike a drill, so it is the least battery-efficient job in the shop and runtime is the real limit. At a bench, a corded sander gives more sustained power for less money.
