Every page on this site that involves a circular saw says the same thing sooner or later: clamp a straightedge to the work and run the saw along it. That one habit is what turns an inexpensive saw into something that cuts plywood as straight as a table saw, and it is the reason we keep telling beginners they do not need a table saw to start. A circular saw pushed freehand along a pencil line wanders — not because you are bad at it, but because the base of the saw has nothing to follow.
So this page is about the thing the saw follows. What money buys is convenience — a rail that clamps itself in seconds, reaches the full 8 feet of a sheet without joints you made yourself, and in some cases carries the saw so it cannot drift away from the edge.
Here is the lens we compare on, in order. Length — a sheet of plywood is 4 feet by 8 feet, so a guide needs roughly 50 inches of capacity to crosscut one and roughly 100 to rip one, and a guide that is too short for the cut you make most is the wrong guide. How it holds — jaws of its own, anti-slip strips, or two clamps you supply, which matters because a clamp head in the saw’s path ends the cut halfway. The offset — whether the saw’s base simply runs against the rail, so you allow for the distance from the edge of the base to the blade on every setup, or whether the saw is carried in a sled or plate. And what else it needs, because a guide that only works with extra clamps, or only with one brand’s rail, is not a finished purchase.

Build one first: the free guide that beats most of these
This is not false modesty. A shop-made guide — a strip of 1/4-inch plywood or hardboard as a base, with a dead-straight fence glued and screwed along it, trimmed once by your own saw — has something no clamp-on rail on this page has out of the box: its edge is the cut line. There is no offset to measure, because the saw has already cut the base to its own offset. Line the edge up with your pencil mark, clamp both ends, cut.
The full build is in how to cut plywood with a circular saw, and the factory edge of a plywood sheet makes the fence. What the shop-made guide lacks is reach and clamping. An 8-foot version is awkward to carry and to store, it is only as straight as the edge you built it from, and you still need two clamps long enough to hold it down. That is precisely the gap the bought guides fill, which is why we would buy a clamp edge after building one, not instead of it.
The offset problem, and the three ways around it
The offset is the distance from the edge of the saw’s base — the flat plate that rides on the wood, usually called the shoe — to the near side of the blade. Every saw is different, and many are different on each side of the blade. With a plain straightedge or a clamp edge, the shoe runs against the rail, so the rail has to sit exactly that distance away from your line, on the side of the line you are keeping. Get it wrong by a sixteenth at one end and the part comes out tapered, and you will not notice until the cabinet door does not close.
Measure it once and write it on the saw. Free, and perfectly good for a few cuts a month. Measure the gap between rail and line at both ends before you cut, every time. This is how the Bora and Prolinemax rails and the Kapro rule are used out of the box.
Use a guide that finds the line for you. The shop-made guide does it by being trimmed to your saw. Kreg’s Straight Edge Guide XL comes with cutline indicator arms, which help you position the rail on your mark.
Carry the saw instead of steering it. Kreg’s Accu-Cut XL puts the saw in a sled that rides on the track, and Bora’s Saw Plate RT locks the saw into a plate that locks onto a Bora rail. Either way the saw can no longer lean away from the edge partway through the cut, which is the most common way a clamped-straightedge cut goes wrong.
None of these is more accurate than a carefully placed straightedge. They are faster, and they remove chances to get it wrong — which, for a beginner cutting the parts of a first cabinet, is worth more than it sounds.
50 inches or 100?
Work backwards from the sheet. Plywood, MDF and most other sheet goods come 4 feet by 8 feet. A crosscut goes across the 4-foot width, so a guide with about 50 inches of capacity covers it with a little to spare. A rip runs down the 8-foot length, and a guide that stops short of the end of the cut means finishing the cut freehand, which is exactly what you bought the guide to avoid.
So the honest rule is to buy for the longest cut you make regularly. If you break sheets down at home, that is the full-length rip, and the Bora NGX 100, the Kreg Straight Edge Guide XL and the Accu-Cut XL all handle it. If you have the home center make the long cuts and only trim to size at home, 50 inches is enough and the Prolinemax rail is the budget way to get it. Clamp edge, track or edge guide: match it to the cut
A clamp edge is a straight aluminum rail with a jaw at each end that grips opposite edges of the piece. It is fast to set, it needs no other clamps, and the Bora and Prolinemax listings both state it will guide a router as well as a saw — so the same rail cuts router dados later. The limit is built into the design: the jaws grip edge to edge, so the rail has to span the whole piece. It cannot hold down on a panel wider than its capacity, or guide a cut that stops short of an edge.
A track system is a rail your saw rides on rather than against. The Accu-Cut XL holds its place with anti-slip strips instead of clamps and carries the saw in a sled; Bora’s Saw Plate RT turns a Bora clamp edge into the same idea. Tracks cost more and take longer to assemble, and they pay back only when you are breaking down sheets often.
An edge guide (often called a rip guide) fixes to the saw’s base and runs along the edge of the board you are cutting. There is nothing to clamp and no line to mark, so ripping a strip to a set width is quick — the Milescraft 1403 handles strips from 1 to 14 inches. It copies whatever edge it follows, wave and all, and it is no help across the middle of a sheet.
A plain straightedge is a rule and two clamps. The Kapro doubles as a long layout rule, which a clamp edge does not, but it is only the cheap option if you already own two clamps long enough to cross the work. The long F-style clamp in our clamp picks is the one we recommend for exactly this.
What a guide will not fix
A guide makes the cut straight. It does not make it clean, safe or square, and the three things that do are cheaper than most of the guides above.
The blade. The 24-tooth framing blade most saws ship with tears plywood veneer no matter how straight the cut is. A 40-tooth finish blade is the fix, and our saw blade picks explain why tooth count matters more than brand. Put the good face down, too: a circular saw’s teeth come up through the top surface, so that is where the splinters end up.
Support. Both halves of the sheet have to stay supported the whole way through the cut, or the kerf closes on the blade and the saw binds. Rigid foam on the floor, or 2x4s across a pair of sawhorses, does that; two sawhorses under the ends of a sheet does not.
Square. A guide is straight, not square. For a crosscut, set the rail square to the factory edge with a square before you clamp it. On narrow boards, under about 6 inches, a speed square held against the edge is itself the guide and you need nothing on this page.

Setting a guide so the cut is actually straight
Guide on the keeper side. Put the rail on the side of the line you are keeping, so the kerf falls in the offcut rather than eating a blade’s width out of your part.
Measure both ends. Set the offset at one end, then check it at the other before you lock the rail down. This is the step people skip, and it is the one that produces tapered parts.
Lock it, then try to move it. Push on the middle of the rail once it is clamped. If it shifts under your hand, it will shift under the saw.
Hold the shoe to the rail and stop steering. Feed at a steady rate with light sideways pressure toward the guide. Do not twist the saw to chase the line; if the rail is right, the line takes care of itself.
Unplug before you adjust anything. Or remove the battery. Setting a depth or fitting a saw plate with the saw live is how a guide becomes an injury.

The one to buy first
Build the shop-made guide this weekend. It costs an offcut, it teaches you what the offset is, and it will cut as straight as anything on this page.
Then, if you break down full sheets at home, buy the Bora NGX 100-inch clamp edge: two pieces, both cuts, no clamps in the way, and a saw plate to add later. If storage is tight, the Kreg Straight Edge Guide XL does the same job in shorter pieces. If you only crosscut, the Prolinemax 50-inch rail does that half for the least money. What is the best circular saw guide for a beginner?+
A self-clamping aluminum clamp edge that is long enough for the cut you make most. For breaking down 4x8 plywood at home that means a 100 inch rail like the Bora NGX 100, which separates into 50 inch halves for crosscuts. If you only ever crosscut sheets, a 50 inch clamp edge does that for less. And before you buy anything, a shop-made guide - a plywood base with a straight fence, trimmed by your own saw - cuts as straight as any of them and costs an offcut.
Do I need a track saw?+
Not for a first shop. A track saw is a circular saw built around its own rail with a zero-clearance edge, and it is genuinely excellent, but it is a second saw. A clamp edge or a track guide for the saw you already own does the same job on plywood. If you find yourself breaking down sheets every week, a track saw starts to make sense; before then it does not.
How long should a circular saw guide be?+
At least as long as the cut. A sheet of plywood is 48 inches wide and 96 inches long, so a guide with about 50 inches of capacity covers a crosscut and you need about 100 inches to rip the full length. If the home center makes your long cuts, a 50 inch guide is enough; if you break sheets down at home, buy for the 8 foot rip.
What is circular saw offset and how do I measure it?+
It is the distance from the edge of the saw's base (the shoe) to the near side of the blade. Measure it with the saw unplugged, on both sides of the blade if you might cut from either, and write it on the saw so you never measure it again. Then clamp the guide that distance from your line, on the side you are keeping, and check the distance at both ends before you cut.
Can I use a level or a piece of plywood as a straightedge?+
Yes, if it is genuinely straight and rigid. The factory edge of a plywood sheet, an aluminum level or an aluminum rule all work. To check one, draw a line along the edge, flip it end for end so the same edge sits on the other side of the line, and draw again - any gap between the two lines shows a bow. Then clamp it at both ends, with the clamps well clear of the saw's path.
Do clamp edge guides need extra clamps?+
No - that is the point of them. A jaw at each end grips opposite edges of the piece, so nothing else sits in the way of the saw. The catch is that they have to span the whole piece edge to edge, so they cannot hold down on a panel wider than their capacity. A plain straightedge or a shop-made guide does need two clamps of its own.
What is the difference between a clamp edge and a track guide?+
With a clamp edge, the saw's base slides against the rail and you account for the offset when you place it. With a track guide, the saw rides on the rail in a sled or plate, so it is captured and cannot drift away from the edge mid-cut. Why does my plywood still splinter when I use a guide?+
A guide fixes straightness, not tear-out. Splintering comes from the blade and from which face is up. Swap the 24-tooth framing blade most saws ship with for a 40 to 60 tooth finish blade, put the good face down because a circular saw's teeth come up through the top surface, and keep the blade depth to about a quarter inch below the sheet.
Is a rip guide or a straightedge better?+
They do different jobs. An edge (rip) guide fixes to the saw and rides along the board's edge, which is quick for narrow strips - up to 14 inches with the Milescraft 1403 - but it copies any wave in that edge and cannot cross a sheet. A straightedge references a line you mark, so it works anywhere on a sheet. For plywood you want the straightedge; for ripping strips off boards the edge guide earns its keep.
