How to Build a Simple Workbench

A rock-solid 5-foot bench from eight 2x4s and one sheet of plywood, held together with screws and glue. A full cut list, the height math, and a weekend.

A workbench is the first thing a shop needs and the last thing most beginners get around to. You can hold a board on a folding table, on sawhorses, on the floor — but everything is harder, everything moves, and eventually you realize that the reason your cuts wander is that the wood is not actually being held still.

This plan is deliberately unromantic. Eight 2x4s, one sheet of plywood, glue and screws. No joinery, no hardwood, no eight-week project. It costs less than most folding work tables, it is dramatically more rigid than any of them, and it is an excellent first build because the skills it teaches — square cuts, accurate repeat lengths, checking diagonals — are the skills every later project needs, with none of the consequences of a visible mistake.

The bench, in one paragraph

Two ladder-shaped end frames made from 2x4s, joined by four long 2x4 stretchers, with a top made from two layers of 3/4 inch plywood glued together and a 1/4 inch hardboard sacrificial layer screwed on top of that. Finished size 60 inches long by 24 inches deep, at whatever height suits you. A lower shelf sits on the bottom stretchers and adds both storage and a great deal of stiffness.

You also need a tape measure, a square, a pencil, wood glue, 3 inch structural screws for the frame, 1 1/4 inch screws for the top laminate, and a countersink bit. Prices for the lumber itself change weekly and vary by region, so we do not quote a total — but this is firmly at the cheap end of anything you will build.

Step 1: work out your height

Do not copy a number off the internet. Stand upright with your arms hanging loose and have someone measure from the floor to the crease of your wrist. That is a good general-purpose bench height for you, and for most adults it lands somewhere between 34 and 38 inches.

Adjust from there for what you actually intend to do:

  • Lower if you plan to hand plane. Planing uses your body weight through your shoulders, and a bench that is too high turns it into an arm exercise. Hand-tool benches are often noticeably lower than people expect.
  • Higher if the bench is mainly for assembly, joinery, sanding and detail work, where you want the work closer to your eyes and your back straight.
  • Match your existing surfaces if you have a table saw or a miter saw stand you would like the bench to act as an outfeed support for. That is a genuinely useful trick in a small garage.

Then subtract the finished top thickness — 3/4 plus 3/4 plus 1/4 equals 1 3/4 inches for the top described here — to get your leg length. If you want a 34 inch bench, the legs are 32 1/4 inches.

Step 2: the cut list

Everything below is for a bench 60 inches long and 24 inches deep. Legs are oriented with their 1 1/2 inch face outward, so the wide face gives the stretchers a proper landing.

  • 4 legs — 2x4, at your finished height minus 1 3/4 inches.
  • 4 short rails — 2x4 at 21 inches. Two per end frame. With a 1 1/2 inch leg at each side, that gives the 24 inch overall depth.
  • 4 long stretchers — 2x4 at 53 inches. With a 3 1/2 inch leg at each end, that gives the 60 inch overall length.
  • 2 top layers — 3/4 inch plywood at 60 by 24 inches.
  • 1 sacrificial layer — 1/4 inch hardboard at 60 by 24 inches.
  • 1 lower shelf — plywood offcut, roughly 53 by 21 inches, notched around the legs.

That is seven 8-foot 2x4s with a little to spare — buy eight, because construction lumber is imperfect and you will want to reject at least one board. One 4x8 sheet of 3/4 inch plywood yields both top layers and the shelf with room left over.

Cut the sheet goods with a circular saw and a clamped straightedge; our plywood cutting guide covers the whole method, including the shop-made cut guide that makes it repeatable. And cut every matched pair of parts against a stop or a clamped block rather than measuring each one separately — four legs that are each within an eighth of an inch of the mark can still be a sixteenth apart from each other, and that is a rocking bench.

Choosing the lumber

Take twenty minutes at the rack. Sight down every 2x4 you pick up and reject anything with a visible bow, twist or crook, and avoid boards with large loose knots near the middle of their length. Construction lumber is often sold wet and will shrink and move as it dries, so if you can, buy it a week or two early and let it sit indoors, stickered, before you cut. Step 3: build the two end frames

Work on the floor, which is the flattest surface in most garages. Lay two legs flat and parallel. Place one short rail across the top, flush with the tops of the legs, and a second rail 10 inches up from what will be the floor end.

Drill two pilot holes and countersinks at each joint — pilot holes are not optional in 2x4 material near a board end, because a screw is a wedge and will split it. Apply glue to the mating faces, clamp, and drive two 3 inch structural screws per joint.

Before the glue grabs, measure both diagonals of the frame. Equal diagonals mean square. If they are not, push the long diagonal until they match and re-check. Repeat for the second end frame, then set both side by side and confirm they are identical.

Step 4: join the ends

Stand both end frames upright, roughly 53 inches apart. Screw the four long stretchers to the inside faces of the legs — the upper pair tight under the top rails, front and back, and the lower pair level with the bottom rails.

Glue every joint. Two screws per end, into pilot holes. Then check the base for square again, this time by measuring diagonals across the top of the whole structure, and rack it gently until they match. This is the last easy moment to fix it.

Drop the plywood shelf onto the lower stretchers, notching its corners around the legs, and screw it down. It is not just storage — a fixed panel in that plane stops the base racking side to side, and it makes a startling difference to how solid the bench feels.

Step 5: the top

Spread glue evenly across one sheet of plywood, lay the second on it, and screw them together from what will be the underside using 1 1/4 inch screws in a grid roughly every 12 inches. Keep the screws short enough that nothing reaches the working face. Weight the laminate down while it cures.

Two layers of 3/4 inch plywood is 1 1/2 inches of very stiff, very flat top. It will not sag between the stretchers, it takes a screw or a bench-dog hole without complaint, and — the reason it is plywood and not a glued-up solid panel — it barely changes dimension with the seasons.

Center the finished top on the base and fix it by driving screws upward through the top rails and upper stretchers into its underside. Fastening from below leaves the working surface completely clear.

Step 6: the sacrificial layer

Lay the 1/4 inch hardboard on top and fasten it with countersunk screws only. No glue. This layer exists to be ruined: it takes the errant saw cuts, the glue drips, the drilled-through holes and the paint. When it is too battered to work on, you unscrew it, buy another sheet, and your real top underneath is untouched.

Countersink every screw slightly below the surface so nothing can catch a workpiece or a plane sole.

Step 7: fit the vise

A bench without a vise is a table. Fitting one is the step that turns this into a workbench, and it is worth doing properly.

Most front vises need more material to bolt into than 1 1/2 inches of plywood, so laminate an extra block of plywood or a length of 2x4 to the underside of the front edge where the vise will sit, before you mount anything. Position the vise near the left front corner if you are right-handed, so the rest of the bench is clear to your dominant side.

Fit wooden jaw liners — scraps of plywood or hardwood — to both jaws, standing a fraction proud of the metal. That protects your work from being dented by the casting and makes the vise grip far better. Our bench vise roundup covers which type suits which kind of work.

Step 8: dog holes, and flattening

If you fitted a vise, add a row of 3/4 inch dog holes along the front edge of the top, about 4 inches in from the edge and roughly 6 inches apart. Bore them with a Forstner bit, square to the surface — clamp a scrap block beside the bit as a visual reference if you do not have a drill press. With a dog in one of those holes and the vise dog raised, you can clamp a board flat on the benchtop, which is how you hold work for planing and sanding.

Finally, lay a straightedge across the top in several directions and along both diagonals. Plywood is flat, so any rock is almost always the floor rather than the bench. Shim the offending foot with a stapled-on scrap and it will stay put. If your garage floor slopes toward the door, as many do, adjust the two downhill legs rather than chasing it with the top.

Two variations worth considering

Casters, if you share the garage. Retracting workbench casters — the kind with a foot lever that lifts the bench onto wheels and drops it back onto its legs — let you roll the bench out of the car’s way and then have a bench that does not move while you work. An overhang for clamps. If you make the top 66 inches rather than 60, you get a 3 inch overhang at each end. That overhang lets you clamp things to the bench from above with F-clamps, which is enormously useful and costs one extra foot of plywood.

Safety while you build it

You are cutting sheet goods and construction lumber with a circular saw, which means eye protection every time — the American Academy of Ophthalmology classes workshop eye injuries as common and almost entirely preventable — and hearing protection, because a saw in a bare concrete garage is punishing. Keep the lower blade guard free and working, support both halves of every cut, and never hold a small offcut by hand while cutting it. The takeaway

A bench does one job: it holds wood still so you can work on it. Everything else — hardwood tops, tail vises, tool wells, dovetailed bases — is refinement of that one job, and none of it matters until you have something heavy, flat and square to work on.

Why plywood for the top instead of solid wood?

Because plywood barely moves with the seasons. Each ply is glued at right angles to its neighbors, so the sheet stays close to its dimensions all year, and a double layer of 3/4 inch is very flat and very stiff. A solid-wood benchtop is a beautiful thing and a much larger project — it needs flattening, movement allowances and a lot of clamps.

Do I need joinery, or are screws fine?

Screws and glue are genuinely fine for a first bench. The joints are large, in compression, and heavily reinforced by the plywood top acting as a rigid diaphragm. Mortise and tenon joinery makes a better bench and takes ten times as long — it is the right project for your third bench, not your first.

How do I stop the bench racking or wobbling?

Three things do almost all of it. Glue every joint as well as screwing it, so the joint cannot work loose over time. Get the base square by checking diagonals at each stage, since a base out of square is already halfway to a parallelogram. And fix the top down firmly — a rigid top screwed to the frame stops the whole structure from leaning. If it still rocks, that is the floor: shim one foot.
