Which Sander Do You Need?
Random orbital, sheet, belt, detail, or a block and your hand — what each sander is genuinely for, and the one a first shop should own.

There are five kinds of sander in the aisle and they look interchangeable. They are not: two of them are finish tools, one is a shaping tool that will wreck a workpiece if you treat it like a finish tool, one is for corners, and one costs nothing and does the final step better than any of them.
The short answer, if you want it now: buy a 5-inch random orbital sander and a cork block, and stop. Here is why, and what each of the others is genuinely for.
Random orbital sander — the one to own
A round pad that spins on its axis while the axis itself moves in a small orbit. The two motions combine so that no point on the abrasive ever repeats the same path across the wood.
That randomness is the whole point. Because there is no repeating pattern, there is no repeating scratch, which means a random orbital can remove real material at 80 grit and still leave a surface that finishes cleanly at 180. No other power sander does both jobs.
- Best at: everything a beginner sands. Faces, panels, edges, tabletops.
- Bad at: inside corners, narrow rails, anything smaller than the pad.
- Watch out for: pressing down. The pad tips, the edge digs in, and you get the exact swirl marks you were trying to avoid.

Sheet sander (quarter-sheet / finishing sander) — the corner specialist
A square or rectangular pad that vibrates in a tight orbit, taking ordinary sandpaper cut to size. Cheap, light, and quiet.
Its advantage over a random orbital is geometric: the pad has square corners, so it reaches into the inside corner of a frame or a carcass where a round pad cannot. Its disadvantage is that every point on the pad repeats the same small loop, so it leaves a faint uniform swirl and removes material slowly.
- Best at: inside corners, light final passes, small flat surfaces.
- Bad at: removing material. It is a finishing tool only.
- Buy one if: you build boxes and frames with internal corners. Otherwise skip it.
Belt sander — the shaping tool
A loop of abrasive running continuously over two drums. It removes material astonishingly fast in one direction, and that is its entire character.
A belt sander is not a bigger finishing sander. It is closer to a plane made of sandpaper. Leave it in one place for two seconds and you have a hollow; tilt it and you have a rounded edge; run it across the grain and you have scratches that take three grits to remove. Beginners buy one thinking it will speed up finishing, and it removes their workpiece instead.
- Best at: flattening rough stock, leveling a glued-up panel, aggressive shaping, sanding a floor.
- Bad at: everything a beginner actually needs.
- The alternative: a hand plane levels a panel faster, quieter, with total control and no dust.
Detail sander (mouse / corner sander) — narrow but real
A small triangular pad that vibrates. It exists to get into places nothing else fits: the inside of a small box, between the spindles of a chair, into the corner of a rebate.
It removes material slowly, the triangular pads wear out at the tip long before the rest, and it is genuinely irreplaceable for the specific jobs it does. Buy one when you meet a job you cannot sand, not before.
A block and your hand — the last step
The final pass on almost any surface should be by hand, with the paper wrapped around a firm block, sanding along the grain.
There is a specific reason. A random orbital leaves faint circular scratches that you cannot see on bare wood and can see very clearly once stain or oil goes on. A light hand pass along the grain at the same grit erases them by replacing them with scratches that run in the direction the eye expects.
A cork block is worth the two dollars over a folded sheet: it stays flat, so it does not round over crisp edges the way finger pressure does. Sanding sponges do the same job on profiles and curves, where a hard block cannot follow the shape.
The comparison, in one place
- Flat panels and tabletops — random orbital, then a hand block along the grain.
- Inside corners of a frame or box — sheet sander, or a block with a sharp square corner.
- Curves and profiles — sanding sponges, or a shaped card scraper.
- Leveling a rough glued-up panel — hand plane first, then random orbital. Belt sander only if you already know how to drive one.
- Removing a finish or paint — random orbital with coarse discs, replaced often, or a chemical stripper.
- Tiny recesses and spindles — detail sander, or folded paper and patience.
Dust is the real hazard here
Sanding produces the finest dust in the shop — particles small enough to stay airborne for hours and to get well past a loose paper mask. It is also the tool you use for the longest continuous stretches, which is exactly the wrong combination.
Use a sander with a working dust port and connect it to a shop vac; the collection bags supplied with cheap sanders catch a fraction of what comes off. Wear a rated respirator rather than a nuisance mask, open the door, and read dust collection for a small shop for the garage-specific setup. One machine, one block, and enough abrasive that you actually change it when it is worn — which is the real determinant of how well any sander works.

The honest summary
One random orbital sander covers about ninety percent of what a first shop sands. Add a cork block for the last pass, sanding sponges for shapes, and buy nothing else until a specific job stops you.
And before you buy a second sander, try a card scraper. On flat solid wood it does the finishing job better than any machine here, costs about as much as a pack of discs, and puts nothing in the air.
One safety note. Power tools deserve respect, not fear. Read the manual, keep the guards on, wear ANSI-rated eye protection every time, and never rush a cut. When something feels wrong, stop and reset — there is no deadline in a home shop.

What sander should a beginner buy first?
A 5-inch random orbital sander. It is the only power sander that removes material at a useful rate without leaving a scratch pattern that shows under finish, which means it can be both your rough sander and your finish sander. Every other type is a specialist that solves a problem you may not have.
What is the difference between an orbital and a random orbital sander?
An orbital, or sheet, sander vibrates a square pad in small circles — the same points travel the same tiny loop, so it leaves a faint repeating swirl. A random orbital spins a round pad while also orbiting it, so no point ever repeats its path. That is why one is a finish sander that can only be used lightly, and the other can remove real material and still finish cleanly.
Do I need a belt sander?
Almost certainly not, and it is the sander most likely to ruin a workpiece. A belt sander removes material extremely fast in one direction and will dish a panel or round an edge in seconds if it pauses. Its real uses are flattening rough stock, leveling a glued-up panel and shaping — jobs a hand plane or a card scraper does more controllably in a small shop.
Why does my finish show swirl marks?
Three usual causes: you skipped a grit, so the coarser scratches were never removed; you pressed too hard, which tips the pad and digs its edge in; or you stopped at too coarse a grit for the finish you used. Let the sander's weight do the work, never skip more than one grit step, and go through every grit in order.
Is hand sanding better than machine sanding?
For the last step, often yes. A final pass by hand with a block, along the grain, removes the faint circular scratches a random orbital leaves and is the difference between a good finish and a great one. For everything before that, a machine is faster and produces a flatter result.
Can I use a drill or an angle grinder as a sander?
You can fit sanding attachments to both, and you should not. Neither has a flat reference surface, both concentrate pressure on a small area, and both spin far too fast for wood — the result is a dished, burnished surface that takes finish unevenly. A cheap random orbital is a much better tool for less money than a set of attachments.
