Corded vs Cordless for a Home Shop

Cordless won the jobsite. A garage shop is a different problem — here's the tool-by-tool answer, and why the cheapest shop is a deliberate mix of both.

Walk into any tool aisle and the message is unmistakable: cordless is the future, corded is the past. That message is largely aimed at people who work on jobsites, where dragging extension cords through a half-built house is a genuine daily problem. In a garage, standing three feet from an outlet, the math is completely different — and following the jobsite advice will cost you several hundred dollars you did not need to spend.

This is the tool-by-tool version of that argument, plus the honest reasons cordless is still worth paying for on the tools where it matters.

What you are actually choosing between

A corded tool draws as much power as it wants, for as long as you hold the trigger, at a constant voltage. That is the entire advantage and it is a big one: a corded router in a deep cut does not slow down at minute four, and a corded sander does not fade halfway through a tabletop.

A cordless tool trades that for freedom of movement, and pays for it three ways. First, voltage sag: as a battery discharges and heats up under load, delivered power drops. Second, weight: the battery is often the heaviest part of the tool, which matters when you hold it overhead. Third, system cost: batteries and chargers are a real and recurring expense, and they degrade with age whether you use them or not.

None of that makes cordless wrong. It makes cordless a feature you should buy deliberately, on the tools where mobility genuinely changes how you work.

The tool-by-tool answer

Drill / driver — cordless, always

This is the one tool where cordless is not a luxury. You pick a drill up and put it down fifty times in a project: drilling a pilot, driving a screw, stopping, repositioning, going again. A cord turns each of those into a small negotiation. Cordless drills are also the most mature, cheapest and most widely available cordless tools on the market. Circular saw — corded for a first shop

A corded circular saw costs a fraction of the cordless equivalent and will rip a full sheet of plywood without flinching or asking for a charger. In a garage that is almost always the right call. Cordless earns its place if you regularly cut outside, on a deck, or at the top of a ladder — and a cordless saw eats batteries faster than any other tool you will own. Router — corded, no real debate

Routers are sustained-load tools: you hold the trigger for the whole length of an edge, at high RPM, removing material continuously. That is precisely the scenario where battery power sags and heat builds. Corded compact routers are inexpensive, light, and hold their speed. See the router picks.

Random orbital sander — corded

Sanding is the longest continuous trigger-pull in woodworking. A cordless sander will get through part of a tabletop and then need a battery, and you will spend the session managing charge instead of sanding. Jigsaw — either, genuinely

Jigsaws are light-load, stop-start tools that you frequently use on odd shapes at odd angles, which is where a trailing cord is most annoying. If you already own the batteries, a cordless jigsaw is a pleasure. If you do not, corded is half the price and just as capable. Our jigsaw picks include both.

Miter saw — corded

Shop vacuum — corded

Brad nailer — a third option

Nailers add a category the rest of this page does not have: air. A pneumatic nailer is the cheapest tool and the most expensive basket, because it needs a compressor and a hose. A cordless one costs more as a tool and nothing after that. Our brad nailer picks price both routes honestly.

The hidden cost nobody puts on the shelf label

Compare two shopping baskets. The corded basket is the tool price, once. The cordless basket is the tool, plus at least two batteries, plus a charger, plus replacement batteries in five to eight years as the originals lose capacity. A cordless tool advertised as costing about the same as its corded sibling is almost always a bare tool— no battery, no charger.

There is a second hidden cost: lock-in. Batteries are not cross-compatible between brands, so once you own two batteries of one brand, every subsequent tool purchase is nudged toward that brand whether or not it makes the best version of the tool you need. That is not a scandal — it is the business model — but it is worth knowing before you buy the first one.

The shop we’d actually build

For a first garage shop, the cheapest sensible configuration is a deliberate mix:

  • Cordless:the drill. One platform, two batteries, and later an impact driver on the same batteries if you find yourself driving a lot of long screws — see drill vs impact driver.
  • Corded: circular saw, router, sander, miter saw, shop vacuum. Every one of these is used standing in the same place, and every one is cheaper and stronger with a cord.
  • Either: jigsaw. Buy whichever fits your batteries and your budget.

The money saved on corded versions of the bench tools is not small. On a typical starter kit it is enough to also cover safety gear, a set of clampsand the wood for your first three projects — which will improve your woodworking considerably more than a cordless sander would.

One thing corded needs that nobody mentions

If you go corded, get one good extension cord and treat it as a tool. Use a heavy-gauge cord — a thin, long cord drops voltage, which makes motors run hot and work harder. Keep it off the floor where you walk and away from where you cut, because the classic corded-tool accident is sawing through your own cable. And plug high-draw tools like a saw and a shop vac into different circuits if your garage has more than one, or you will spend the afternoon resetting a breaker. One safety note. Power tools deserve respect, not fear. Read the manual, keep the guards on, wear ANSI-rated eye protection every time, and never rush a cut. When something feels wrong, stop and reset — there is no deadline in a home shop.

Frequently asked questions

Is corded still more powerful than cordless?

For sustained heavy cutting, generally yes. A corded tool draws unlimited power for as long as you hold the trigger; a cordless tool draws from a battery that sags under load and gets hot. Modern high-output batteries have closed the gap for short bursts, but a corded router or circular saw still holds its speed better through a long, deep cut.

Which tools should a beginner buy cordless?

The drill, without question — cord-free is genuinely transformative for a tool you pick up fifty times a project. After that, a jigsaw and a compact circular saw are pleasant cordless. Everything you use standing at a bench in the same spot is better and cheaper corded.

Does it matter which battery platform I choose?

More than the tool itself. Batteries are not cross-compatible between brands, so the platform you pick is a decade-long commitment. Choose based on the breadth and price of the whole range, not on a single tool review.

Are cordless tools more expensive overall?

Yes, once you count batteries. A bare cordless tool looks cheap, but batteries are a significant part of the system cost and they degrade with age whether you use them or not. A corded equivalent typically costs less up front and has nothing that wears out on a shelf.

Do batteries go bad if I don't use them?

They lose capacity slowly regardless of use — lithium-ion ages on a calendar as well as on a cycle count. Storing them around half charge in a moderate temperature slows it down. A battery left in a freezing or baking garage at full charge for years will disappoint you.
