A miter saw does one thing and does it extremely well: it makes repeatable crosscuts, square or angled, without you having to be accurate. Set the fence, drop the blade, and every piece comes out the same. For anyone building shelves, boxes, frames or furniture with a lot of identical parts, that repeatability is transformative — and it is the thing hand tools and a circular saw genuinely cannot match without a lot of setup.

Blade size is capacity, not power
A 12-inch saw does not cut “harder” than a 10-inch saw. Both run 15-amp motors. The bigger blade simply reaches further, so it crosscuts wider boards. If you never cut anything wider than a 2x6, a 10-inch saw is the smarter buy — and 10-inch blades cost noticeably less to replace.
Sliding buys width, and costs space
A sliding saw’s head travels forward and back on rails, so a 10-inch slider can crosscut nearly as wide as a fixed 12. The catch is that those rails need clearance behindthe saw. In a garage shop where the bench is against a wall, a slider jammed against that wall cannot use its slide — which is the only reason you paid extra. Measure the space before you buy.
Dual bevel saves flipping, nothing else
A single-bevel saw tilts one way. To cut opposing bevels (for a picture frame or crown molding) you flip the workpiece and re-register it. A dual-bevel saw tilts both ways so you do not. It is a convenience feature, not an accuracy feature, and a beginner cutting shelves will never notice its absence.
What a miter saw cannot do
This is worth stating plainly, because it is where beginner disappointment comes from. A miter saw cannot rip— it cannot cut a board lengthwise to make it narrower. It cannot cut sheet goods; a full sheet of plywood will not fit on it in any useful way. And it cannot cut curves.
It is a crosscut specialist. That is not a criticism — crosscutting to length is genuinely most of furniture work — but if you buy one expecting it to be your only saw you will be stuck the first time a project needs a narrower board. A circular saw with a straightedge covers the ripping and sheet-goods jobs for a fraction of the price.
Setup: the ten minutes that decide everything
Miter saws arrive roughly calibrated and go out of calibration in transit. Do this before your first real cut.
Check the blade against the fence. Drop the head, set it to the 0-degree miter detent, and hold a reliable square between the blade body (not a tooth) and the fence. If it is not 90 degrees, adjust the detent per the manual.
Check the blade against the table. Same square, held vertically. Adjust the bevel stop if needed.
Cut a wide board and flip-test it.Crosscut a board, flip one piece over, and butt the two cut ends together. If there is a gap at top or bottom, the blade is not square to the table — and the test doubles any error, so it detects problems a square might miss.
Support, and why it matters more than the saw
The single biggest cause of inaccurate miter saw cuts is unsupported workpieces. A board hanging off the saw’s small table sags, so the cut is not square to the board even though the saw is perfectly set up.
Fix it with something either side of the saw at exactly the same height as its table — a purpose-made stand, a couple of blocks on your bench, or scrap plywood shimmed to match. And use the saw’s hold-down clamp, especially on short pieces: a small offcut that catches the blade can be launched hard.
Let the blade reach full speed before it touches the wood, and let it stop completely before you lift the head — raising a spinning blade through the kerf is how offcuts get thrown.
