About Grain & Glue
The honest guide to building your first woodworking shop from an empty garage — no gatekeeping, no fake testing, no wasted money.
Grain & Glue exists for one person: the beginner standing in an empty garage, a little overwhelmed, trying to figure out what to actually buy. Woodworking is one of the most rewarding things you can learn, and it is also surrounded by a wall of jargon and tool marketing that makes it feel more expensive and more complicated than it is. Our whole job is to knock a hole in that wall.
We do that three ways. We tell you what to buy first— a small kit of good tools, not a garage full of machines. We tell you what to skip— the table saw, the 40-piece bit set, the gadgets you will never touch. And we tell you what it actually costs, with live prices and a running total, so there are no surprises. Every recommendation ends in one clear pick a beginner can buy without agonizing.
Who writes this
Grain & Glue is written by Stephen V., and we want to be completely straight with you about what that means. Stephen is a woodworking enthusiast — genuinely into building a first shop the smart way. He is not a master craftsman and does not run a test lab. What he does is read the manuals, compile the published specs, price everything from live retail data, and do the math — total cost to start, what to buy first, what to skip — so a nervous beginner doesn't have to. No lab coat, no sponsorships steering the picks.
That last part matters, so let us say it plainly: we have not hands-on-tested every tool we recommend, and we do not pretend to.Plenty of “we tested 40 chisels” roundups didn’t, and can’t prove they did. Instead of borrowing a credential we don’t have, we compete on something you can actually check: we read the manuals, compile the published specifications, price everything from live data, and do the math. Our full method is on the how we choose page, and we mean every word of it.
What we will never do
- Fake a review. There are no invented testimonials, star ratings, or “in our shop” photos anywhere on this site. If we can’t source it, it isn’t here.
- Let commission pick the winner. When a cheaper or simpler tool is the right call for a beginner, that is our pick — even when it earns us less. Our affiliate disclosure explains exactly how we make money.
- Show you a stale price. Prices come from a daily retailer check and carry the date they were pulled. If the check stops, the number disappears rather than misleading you.
- Claim expertise we don’t have.No “master craftsman,” no “years in the trade,” no test lab. Just an enthusiast doing the homework in the open.
Where to start
If you are brand new, head to Start Here— it lays out the first tools to buy, what it costs, and whether to begin with hand tools or power tools. If you already know what you need, jump straight to the complete beginner tool kit. Either way, welcome. Everyone was a beginner once, and there has never been a better time to start.
