Cordless Tool Battery Platforms Explained

DeWalt, Ryobi, Makita, Milwaukee — you are not choosing a drill, you are choosing a battery you will keep buying for the next decade. How to choose once.

Here is a thing nobody tells you when you buy your first cordless drill: you are not really buying a drill. You are joining a battery system, and every cordless tool you buy for the next ten years will either fit that system or require you to start a second one. The drill costs eighty dollars. The decision costs considerably more.

This is not a reason to agonize. All the major platforms are good. But it is a reason to choose deliberately, once, rather than buying whatever was on sale three separate times and ending up with three chargers, three sets of dead batteries, and no way to move a pack from one tool to another.

What a platform actually is

A platform is a manufacturer’s shared battery: one physical connector, one voltage, fitting every tool in that range. Buy into it and a battery from your drill runs your sander, your circular saw, your jigsaw and your leaf blower.

The main ones you will encounter are DeWalt 20V MAX, Ryobi ONE+ 18V, Makita LXT 18V, Milwaukee M18, Bosch 18V and Black+Decker 20V MAX Powerconnect. There are adapters between some of them, mostly third-party, and mostly not worth the compromise.

18V or 20V? A naming trick, not a spec

This confuses everyone, so let us settle it. A lithium-ion cell has a nominal voltage of 3.6V and a peak, fully-charged voltage of 4.0V. Five cells in series therefore give a nominal 18V and a peak 20V.

They are the same battery.Some manufacturers market the peak figure (“20V MAX”), others the nominal one (“18V”). A DeWalt 20V MAX pack and a Makita 18V LXT pack are electrically equivalent. Nobody is cheating; it is a marketing convention. Do not choose a platform based on that number.

The specs that do matter

Amp-hours (Ah) — how long it runs

This is capacity. A 4.0Ah pack holds roughly twice the energy of a 2.0Ah pack at the same voltage, so it runs about twice as long. Bigger packs are heavier and pricier, and they also tend to deliver current more willingly under heavy load — which is why a demanding tool like a circular saw feels stronger on a big pack than a small one, even though the voltage is identical.

A sensible beginner setup is two batteries: one compact 2.0Ah for drilling and driving, where light weight matters, and one 4.0Ah or larger for saws and sanders.

Brushed or brushless — how efficient it is

Brushed motors use physical carbon contacts to switch current; brushless motors do it electronically. Brushless means more runtime per charge, less heat, more power for the size, and no brushes to wear out. It costs more.

For a drill you use constantly, brushless is worth it. For a tool you use six times a year, it is not. Do not let brushless marketing push you into a more expensive platform than you need.

Bare tool vs kit — the pricing trap

Cordless tools are sold two ways: as a kit (tool, battery, charger, often a case) or as a bare tool(just the tool). Bare tools look dramatically cheaper and are, once you already own batteries. For your first purchase you need a kit; after that, bare tools are how the platform pays you back. Check which you are looking at before comparing prices — this catches everyone once.

How to choose, honestly

If budget is the main constraint

Ryobi ONE+is the pragmatic answer, and there is no shame in it. The range is enormous, the tools are inexpensive, batteries are cheap, and every ONE+ battery made since 1996 fits every ONE+ tool — an unusually long compatibility record. The tools are not as strong or as durable as the professional brands, and for hobby use in a garage that mostly does not matter.

If you want tools that will outlast the hobby

DeWalt 20V MAX and Makita LXT are the sensible enthusiast choices: stronger tools, better ergonomics, wide availability, and both ranges are broad enough that you will not hit a gap. Milwaukee M18 is excellent and generally the most expensive.

If you already own something

Then you have already chosen. Unless the platform you own is genuinely limited, stay in it. The value of a platform is entirely in the batteries you already have, and switching throws that away.

When cordless is the wrong answer

Cordless is not automatically better. Two honest exceptions for a garage shop.

Sanders.Sanding draws power continuously for long periods, which is the worst possible battery workload. A corded sander gives sustained power for less money and never stops mid-panel — see our sander picks for the corded options.

Stationary tools. A miter saw or a table saw that lives in one place next to an outlet has nothing to gain from a battery and quite a lot to lose in sustained power.

Cordless genuinely wins for drills and drivers, for saws used away from the bench, and anywhere a trailing cable is a snag hazard — which is a real safety consideration with a circular saw.

Looking after batteries

Lithium-ion packs are not fussy, but three habits meaningfully extend their life. Do not store them fully flat — a deeply discharged pack left for months may never recover. Do not leave them in a freezing or baking garage if you can avoid it; temperature extremes are what actually kill cells. And do not leave a pack on the charger for weeks at a time, even though modern chargers handle it.

Store them at a partial charge, indoors, and expect five years or more of useful life. When a pack finally dies, it can be recycled at most tool retailers — do not put lithium cells in household waste.
