How to Cut Straight With a Jigsaw

A jigsaw wanders because the blade bends, not because you do. The blade, speed and guide settings that make a jigsaw cut a line it can actually hold.

More beginners are disappointed by a jigsaw than by any other power tool, and the complaint is always the same: the cut wanders on top and comes out sloped underneath. It feels like a hand-steadiness problem, and it almost never is.

A jigsaw blade is a thin strip of steel gripped at one end and completely unsupported below the shoe. Every other saw supports its blade on both sides of the cut. So when the blade meets resistance — a hard growth ring, a fast feed, a nudge sideways — it bends, and the bottom of the cut goes somewhere the top of the cut did not. Almost everything below is about not letting it bend.

One honest framing first: a jigsaw is a curve-cutting tool that cancut straight, not a straight-cutting tool. Fix 1: use a thicker, wider blade

This is the single biggest improvement available, and it is also the cheapest. The narrow blades that come in the box are narrow so they can turn tight curves. Width and thickness are exactly what resists bending, so a curve blade is the worst possible choice for a straight line.

Pick the thickest, widest blade whose radius still suits your job, and match the tooth count to the material: fewer, bigger teeth for fast cuts in thick softwood; more, finer teeth for plywood and hardwood, where a coarse tooth tears the veneer. A clean-cut or reverse-tooth wood blade cuts on the downstroke, which puts the tear-out on the underside instead of the face you are looking at.

Change blades often. A dull jigsaw blade does not simply cut slower — it needs more push, and more push is precisely what bends it. Blades are consumables and cheap; treat a wandering cut as a reason to fit a fresh one.

Fix 2: turn the orbital action off

Most jigsaws have an orbital or pendulum setting, usually numbered 0 to 3. It swings the blade forward into the workpiece on the upstroke so the teeth bite harder, which removes material dramatically faster.

It also throws the blade around, roughens the edge and makes the tool harder to steer. For any cut where accuracy matters, set it to 0. Use the higher settings for rough cuts in thick material where speed is the point and the edge will be trimmed later.

Same logic for speed if your saw is variable: moderate speed with a steady feed beats maximum speed. Very high speed in plywood also heats the blade, and a hot blade is a bendy one.

Fix 3: check the shoe is actually square

Almost every jigsaw has a bevel adjustment so the shoe can tilt for angled cuts, and on cheaper saws that adjustment drifts — sometimes straight out of the box. If your cuts are consistently sloped in the same direction by the same amount, this is your cause, not your technique.

Unplug the saw or remove the battery, stand a square against the blade and the shoe, and look for light. Reset the bevel to zero and lock it. It takes a minute and it is worth doing before you blame anything else — and worth re-checking after the saw has been knocked about in a toolbox.

Fix 4: clamp a guide and stop steering

The real answer to a straight jigsaw cut is the same as for a circular saw: do not follow a pencil line by eye, follow a physical edge.

  1. Measure from the edge of the shoe to the blade. That distance is your offset, and it is fixed for your saw.
  2. Clamp a straightedge parallel to your cut line, offset by that distance on the waste-free side.
  3. Run the flat edge of the shoe against the guide with steady sideways contact, and push forward gently. Do not try to correct toward the line — that side pressure is what bends the blade.

Many jigsaws also include a rip fence that slots into the shoe and rides the edge of the board. It works well for cuts within a few inches of an existing straight edge and is useless beyond that, because the fence is short and the board’s edge may not be straight.

Fix 5: support the work properly

A jigsaw blade travels down as well as up, so the material has to be supported close to the cut without the blade hitting anything. Two rules:

  • Clamp the workpiece.Vibration is the jigsaw’s signature, and a board that rattles transfers all of it into the cut. Clamping also keeps both your hands on the tool.
  • Keep the shoe flat on the surface at all times.Tipping the saw — especially at the start and the end of a cut — angles the blade instantly. Start with the shoe down and the blade clear of the wood, bring it up to speed, then advance.

Check the blade clearance underneath before you start. A blade that strikes a sawhorse rail mid-cut will jam, and a jammed jigsaw jumps. Sawhorses with a grid of scrap across them solve both support and clearance at once.

Getting a clean edge, not just a straight one

Straight and clean are different problems. Because standard teeth cut on the upstroke, splintering happens on the topface — the opposite of a circular saw.

  • Cut with the good face down, unless you are using a reverse-tooth blade.
  • Run masking tape along the line to hold the surface fibres down.
  • Use the zero-clearance insertif your saw came with one — the plastic shoe plate with a narrow blade slot, which supports the wood right at the blade.
  • Cut proud and trim. Leave a millimetre and clean the edge with a block plane, a card scraper or a router with a flush-trim bit. This is how you get a genuinely furniture-quality edge from a jigsaw.

When to stop and use something else

Being honest about the tool’s limits will save you more time than any technique here. Reach for a different saw when:

Why won't my jigsaw cut a straight line?

Because the blade is bending, not because your hands are unsteady. Is a jigsaw or circular saw better for straight cuts?

A circular saw, clearly. Its blade is rigid, supported on both sides of the cut and cannot deflect the way a jigsaw blade does. Use a jigsaw for curves, interior cutouts and holes — the things a circular saw cannot do at all — and a circular saw with a guide for long straight cuts in sheet goods.
