How to Cut a Dovetail by Hand

The joint everyone wants to cut, broken into eight steps you can do with a saw, a chisel and a marking knife — plus the honest truth about your first six attempts.

The dovetail is the joint that made you want to do this. It is on every antique drawer, in every workshop photograph, and it has a reputation for being the point where woodworking becomes serious. That reputation is half earned. Cutting a dovetail is not conceptually hard — it is eight steps, four tools and about twenty minutes. What is hard is cutting one that closes up with no gaps, and that is a matter of practice rather than talent.

So here is the deal this page offers. It will teach you the whole joint, honestly, including the parts most guides skip. And it will tell you up front that your first attempt will have gaps, your second will have fewer, and by the sixth you will have a joint you would show someone. Nobody’s first dovetail is clean. The people whose dovetails look effortless simply cut their bad ones years ago.

What the joint actually is

A through dovetail joins two boards at a corner using interlocking wedges. The angled ones are called tails; the ones between them, cut on the mating board, are pins. The wedge shape means the joint physically cannot pull apart in one direction — which is exactly why drawer fronts have been dovetailed for centuries, since a drawer spends its life being pulled.

Two terms you need before we start. The baseline is the scribed line that marks how deep the cuts go; it equals the thickness of the mating board. The wasteis the material you remove. Shade the waste with a pencil before you cut anything — the single most common beginner disaster is sawing the wrong side of a line, and shading prevents it entirely.

The four tools

  • A sharp bench chisel, ideally one narrower than your narrowest pin socket. Sharp is not optional here: dull steel crushes end grain fibers rather than severing them, and crushed fibers spring back and make the joint tight in the wrong places.
  • A marking gauge to scribe the baseline. A pencil line is about half a millimeter wide, which is a large fraction of the tolerance you are working to.

Step by step

1. Start with square, flat stock

Both boards must be the same thickness, with ends cut genuinely square in both directions. Check with a square before you mark anything. A dovetail on an out-of-square end cannot close — you will spend an hour chasing a gap that was baked in before you picked up the saw. Practice in pine or poplar: cheap, soft and forgiving.

2. Scribe the baseline

Set the marking gauge to the exact thickness of the mating board and scribe all the way around the end of both pieces. Slightly proud is better than slightly shy — a hair of extra length gets planed flush after assembly, while a joint that finishes short leaves a step you cannot fix.

3. Lay out the tails

On the end grain of the tail board, mark out the tails. Start with a half-pin at each edge (a narrow angled section), then two or three tails between them. Use about 1:6 for softwood, 1:8 for hardwood — a small dovetail marker or a sliding bevel makes this repeatable. Square the lines down both faces to the baseline and shade every waste area.

Do not agonize over spacing. Hand-cut dovetails are meant to look hand-cut; slight irregularity reads as craft, not error. What must be consistent is the angle.

4. Saw the tail cheeks

Clamp the board upright in a viseat a comfortable height. Saw down each line, always on the waste side, stopping exactly at the baseline. Start each cut with light backward strokes to establish a kerf, then let the saw do the work — pressure makes a thin blade wander.

Watch two things at once: the saw must stay vertical when viewed from the front, and follow the marked slope when viewed from the side. If that feels like too much to track, tilt the board in the vise so the cut line is vertical, and just saw straight down.

5. Remove the waste between the tails

Cut out the bulk with a coping saw, staying a millimeter or two above the baseline. Then pare the rest away with a chisel: place the edge in the scribed baseline, chisel vertical, and take small bites working from one face halfway through, then flip the board and meet from the other side. Chopping all the way from one side blows out the far face.

6. Transfer the tails to the pin board

This is the step where the joint is won or lost. Stand the tail board precisely on the end of the pin board — edges flush, no overhang — and hold it there without any movement. Scribe around every tail with the marking knife. Those knife lines are the pins; they cannot be wrong relative to the tails, because they were made by the tails.

Square the knife lines down the face to the baseline and shade the waste again. Take your time on the alignment: a millimeter of slip here becomes a millimeter of gap you cannot close.

7. Saw and chop the pins

Saw down on the waste side of each knifed line to the baseline. Coping-saw the bulk out, then chop to the baseline with the chisel — again, half the depth from one face, then flip and meet it. Keep the chisel dead vertical against the baseline and take fine cuts near the line rather than one confident swing.

Then check the inside corners. A small triangle of uncut fiber where the pin wall meets the baseline is the most common reason a joint will not seat, and it is invisible unless you look for it. Clear the corners with the tip of a narrow chisel.

8. Test fit — hand pressure only

Push the joint together by hand. If it goes about a third of the way and stops, that is normal and encouraging. Look for shiny compressed spots — those are the tight areas — and pare them back. Pare the pins, not the tails: the tails are your reference and the pins were derived from them, so pins are where the adjustment belongs.

Do not force a tight joint together with a mallet during a dry fit. You may not get it apart, and a dovetail can only be assembled a limited number of times before the fibers compress and it loosens.

Glue-up

Dovetails need surprisingly little clamping pressure — the mechanical interlock does the work, and glue on long-grain-to-long-grain contact is already stronger than the wood. Brush glue on the pin walls and tail cheeks, assemble, and use light clamp pressure just to close the shoulders. See our guide to wood glue for which glue and how long to wait. The honest bit about gaps

You will have gaps. Everyone does. The traditional fix is to take a thin sliver of the same species, put glue on it, and tap it into the gap with the grain running the same direction, then plane it flush when dry. Done carefully it is essentially invisible, and it has been done on fine furniture for hundreds of years. What you should not do is fill gaps with wood filler — it takes finish differently and turns a small gap into a permanent dark patch.

Then cut another one. The reason this joint has such a reputation is that it is the clearest possible feedback on your sawing and chisel work: every mistake shows, immediately, in a way that a butt joint never will. That is exactly why it is worth practicing, and why six practice joints in pine will improve everything else you build.

Frequently asked questions

What tools do I need to cut a dovetail by hand?

Four: a backed saw (a dozuki or a Western dovetail saw), a sharp bench chisel, a marking gauge and a marking knife. A coping saw makes waste removal much faster but is not strictly required. Nothing on that list is expensive, and all of it is useful for everything else you build.

Should I cut the tails or the pins first?

Tails first is easier for beginners. The tail cuts are straight and can be sawn freely, then transferred to the pin board with a knife, so the pins are guaranteed to match the tails you actually cut rather than the ones you meant to cut. Pins-first has advantages for some workflows, but it is not the place to start.

What angle should a dovetail be?

Roughly 1:6 for softwood and 1:8 for hardwood — that is one unit sideways for every six or eight along. The exact number matters far less than consistency. Too steep and the short grain at the tail tips breaks off; too shallow and the joint loses its mechanical lock.

Why won't my dovetail close up?

Almost always one of three things: the baseline was scribed in the wrong place, you sawed on the line instead of beside it, or there is waste left in a corner. Check the corners first with a chisel — a tiny triangle of uncut fiber in the inside corner is the single most common cause and takes ten seconds to remove.

How many practice joints will it take?

Expect the first three or four to have visible gaps and the fifth or sixth to look like a joint. That progression is normal and it is fast — a practice dovetail in pine takes twenty minutes. Cut six of them in one evening and you will be a different woodworker at the end of it.
