Where things stand right now

No Black Friday deals are live yet. This page was written in September so that it is ready before the sale, not after it. Right now it does three jobs: it tells you what has historically gone on sale in woodworking tools and what has not, it tells you which tools to buy today and which to wait for, and it lists our current top pick in every category at its live price, so that when a November number appears you have something real to compare it with. When deals go live in November, they will be posted on this page, each with the date it was checked.

One promise up front, because this category of page is usually full of invented numbers: nothing here is a prediction. Every date and every pattern below is quoted from a source we fetched and read, and every price is live from our daily retail check. Where we could not find a pattern, we say so rather than guessing.

When the sales actually run

Amazon.In 2025, Amazon’s Black Friday Week and Cyber Monday event ran from November 20 at 12:01 am PST through Cyber Monday on December 1 — twelve days, with Black Friday itself on November 28. In 2024 the equivalent event ran November 21 through December 2, and Amazon announced those dates on November 12. So the two-year pattern is an event that opens on the Thursday a week before Thanksgiving and closes on Cyber Monday, announced a week or two beforehand. As of the week this page was written, Amazon had not announced 2026 dates, and a September 9 report was still describing the October event as unconfirmed. Black Friday 2026 falls on November 27; we will post Amazon’s dates here when they are published.

The October event.Amazon has also run a fall Prime sale; in 2025 it was October 7–8. It is worth knowing about because a tool you want may appear there first, and because a “Black Friday price” in late November is sometimes the same price the tool carried in October. Again: 2026 dates were not confirmed when we wrote this.

The home centers.The big tool promotions do not wait for the fourth Friday of November. In 2025, a round-up of Home Depot’s free-tool promotions was published on October 27 — a month before Black Friday — and noted that the deals were good through the end of the year but that supplies usually sell out sooner. If the tool you want is a cordless kit from a major brand, the window is roughly late October to New Year, not one Friday.

What historically goes on sale

We read the 2025 tool-deal coverage rather than recalling it, and the same categories recur. None of this is a promise about 2026; it is what the last sale looked like.

• Cordless platform tools, especially kits.The signature promotion is “buy a cordless power tool starter kit or combo, get a free tool” — you buy a battery-and-charger starter kit or a combo kit and choose a free tool, battery or accessory. In 2025 that ran across DeWalt, Milwaukee, Ryobi, Ridgid and Makita at Home Depot, with a Kobalt equivalent at Lowe’s. Drill/driver kits were the doorbuster staple: the DeWalt round-up quoted an Atomic 20V drill kit at $99 and a starter-kit-plus-free-tool deal at $199. Those are 2025 prices, quoted as history.
• Tool storage. Stackable box systems (ToughSystem, Packout) were a recurring deal line.
• Shop vacuums. Named among the most common deal categories.
• Mechanics’ tool sets.The big socket-and-wrench sets — not woodworking tools, but they crowd the same sale and are easy to mistake for a woodworking buy.
• Miter saws and table saws. Listed in the DeWalt deal categories for 2025. If you have decided you genuinely need one, the sale is the time to check.
• Deal formats. Two kinds: limited-quantity doorbusters that are gone once they sell out, and limited-time price reductions. The coverage we read advised checking on Thanksgiving, Black Friday, through the weekend and on Cyber Monday, because different deals surface on different days.

What rarely discounts

This is the section other pages skip, because “probably not on sale” does not sell anything. It is also the more useful half.

• Small-press woodworking books.The one category with a written policy. Lost Art Press — publisher of two titles on our books roundup — states plainly: “As a rule we don’t discount our books. In fact, the price of our books can only go up in the future.” Do not wait for a sale on these; do buy them direct, where they were far cheaper than the Amazon listings on the day we checked.
• Hand tools from small and specialist makers.Japanese saws, chisels, planes, marking tools, sharpening stones. We looked for a consistent Black Friday pattern in the coverage and did not find one — the tool-deal round-ups are overwhelmingly about cordless platforms and storage. We are not saying these never discount; we are saying we have no evidence they reliably do, so waiting is a gamble with a dull chisel as the stake.
• Safety gear. Not because it never discounts, but because the amounts involved are small and the reason to have it is not.

Buy now or wait for November, by product class

The honest version of “should I wait?” depends on two things: whether the category has a real history of discounting, and whether you need the tool before the sale. Here is our call for each class of tool a first shop buys.

Wait, if you can

• Cordless drill kits and combo kits.The most consistently discounted category, and the free-tool promos add real value if you were going to buy that platform anyway. Decide your platform first — our battery platforms guide explains why that decision matters for a decade — then wait for the kit.
• Shop vacuums and tool storage. Recurring deal categories and rarely urgent. Wait.
• Miter saws, table saws, planers.They appear in the deal listings, and most beginners should wait on them anyway — our do you need a table saw? guide makes the case. If November arrives and you still want one, that is a good sign you actually do.

Buy now

• Safety gear. Today. See above.
• Hand tools: chisels, a saw, a block plane, a square, a marking gauge. No pattern we could find, and these are what you learn on. A beginner who buys chisels in September has two more months of practice than one who waited for a discount that may not come. Our beginner tool kit is the list.
• Sharpening gear. Same logic, stronger: every hand tool is useless without it.
• Books. Buy now, buy direct where the publisher is cheaper.
• Consumables— sanding discs, blades, glue, finish. Buy as you need them. A deal on a blade you will not use until spring is not a deal.

Either

• Corded power tools— the random orbital sander, a budget circular saw, a compact router. These sit outside the platform-promo machine, and the coverage we read was thin on them. Buy when a project needs one; check this page in November if it can wait.
• Clamps. You will buy clamps for years. Buy the first set now and add whenever they are cheap.

How to tell a real deal from a fake one

1. Compare with a real baseline.The table above, or a price you saw with your own eyes in October. The “was $X” on a sale page is a list price, and list prices are not what anyone was paying.
2. Check what is in the box.A cordless tool at a startling price is often a bare tool: no battery, no charger. It only helps if you already own that platform. Kits say “kit” and list the batteries.
3. Doorbusters sell out.That is their design. If the one you wanted is gone, the next-cheapest tool in the listing is not the same deal — it is a different purchase, and it should be judged on its own.
4. A free tool is only free if you wanted the kit. The starter-kit promos are excellent value for someone who has chosen a platform and needs batteries. They are a poor reason to choose a platform.
5. Ignore the countdown. The 2025 events ran twelve days at Amazon and two months at the home centers. Almost nothing in this hobby needs to be bought in the next four minutes.
