Plywood vs Solid Wood
Which to build from, why plywood does not move and solid wood does, and how to choose without paying for the wrong one twice.

Almost every beginner project starts with this choice, usually made at the rack on price alone, and then regretted at the assembly stage when the edges look wrong or the panel cracks six months later.
They are not competing materials so much as different ones. Plywood is engineered to be stable and wide; solid wood is beautiful and alive and moves. Getting this right is mostly a matter of knowing which of those properties your project needs.
The one difference that drives everything: movement
Wood absorbs and releases moisture with the humidity around it, and it swells and shrinks as it does — substantially across its width, barely at all along its length. That is not a defect; it is what wood does, permanently.
Plywood is made by gluing thin veneers together with the grain of each layer at right angles to its neighbors. Because a sheet of wood cannot move much along its length, each layer physically restrains the layer beside it from moving across its width. The result is a panel that stays essentially the same size all year.
That single property is why kitchen cabinets, drawer bottoms and cabinet backs are plywood. A wide solid panel trapped in a frame that does not move will eventually split — and the traditional solutions to that problem (floating panels, breadboard ends, elongated screw holes) exist precisely because plywood did not. The comparison, point by point
Stability
Plywood wins, decisively. It is the reason it exists. If your design has a wide panel captured on all four sides, plywood removes an entire category of failure.
Strength
Split decision. Solid wood is stronger along its grain, and it is what you want for anything slender that carries load — a leg, a rail, a chair part. Plywood is far more consistent: nearly as strong across the sheet as along it, resistant to splitting, and much better at resisting a wide shelf sagging.
Where plywood is weak is screwed into its edge. Driving a screw into the laminated edge of a sheet risks delaminating it, which is why plywood carcasses are usually joined with dados, rabbets or hardware rather than edge screws.
Cost
Plywood usually wins for wide parts. A 24-inch wide solid panel has to be glued up from three or four boards, with the jointing, gluing, clamping and flattening that implies. Plywood arrives 48 inches wide.
For narrow parts the calculation flips, and cabinet-grade hardwood plywood is genuinely expensive — often more per square foot than the equivalent solid softwood.
Appearance
Solid wood wins. Plywood’s face veneer is real wood and can look excellent, but the edges show the layers, the veneer is uniform in a way that reads as manufactured, and you cannot shape it — a routed profile on a plywood edge exposes the plies.
The standard fix is edge banding (iron-on veneer tape) or a solid wood edge strip glued on, which also protects a vulnerable corner. Budget the time for it: edging is the step people forget when comparing prices.
Workability
Solid wood wins, once you can sharpen. It planes, chisels, carves and scrapes; the glue in plywood dulls edge tools fast, and its face veneer is often under a millimeter thick, so a scraper or an aggressive sander goes straight through it.
Plywood is easier in one specific way: it is flat and stays flat, so it does not need four-squaring before you can use it.
Size handling

Plywood grades, briefly
Plywood is graded by face quality, usually as two letters — one for each face. A is the best, then B, C and D as knots, patches and voids increase.
- A/B or A/C hardwood plywood. A good face, a lesser back. What cabinet work is built from.
- Sanded pine or fir plywood. Cheaper, more knots, more voids in the core. Fine for shop furniture and jigs.
- Sheathing / CDX. Construction plywood. Rough, often patched, and the core may contain voids that show at a cut edge. Not for furniture.
- Baltic birch. Many thin plies, few voids, and an edge attractive enough to leave exposed. The favorite for jigs, drawers and shop fixtures, and priced accordingly.
Void content matters more than the face grade for anything you cut into. A void at a dado is a hole you cannot fix.
Where MDF fits
MDF is not plywood. It is wood fiber and resin compressed into a very flat, very uniform board.
It is excellent for painted work, for jigs and templates where flatness matters, and for router templates because its edge machines beautifully. It is very heavy, has almost no strength when fastened into its edge, swells permanently and irreversibly if it gets wet, and produces extremely fine dust — wear a proper respirator, not a nuisance mask, and read dust collection for a small shop.
Which to use, project by project
- Cabinet and bookcase carcasses — plywood. Wide, stable, no glue-up.
- Face frames, doors, legs and rails — solid wood. Narrow parts, visible, and they need the strength along the grain.
- Drawer boxes — either. Baltic birch plywood is strong and stable; solid wood looks better if the drawer is seen.
- Drawer bottoms and cabinet backs — plywood, always. These are the classic panels that must not move.

- Shop furniture, jigs and workbench tops — plywood or MDF. Cheap, flat, and nobody is judging it.
- Anything outdoors — solid rot-resistant species, or plywood specifically rated for exterior use. Interior plywood delaminates outside.
Mixing them is normal, not cheating
Almost all commercial furniture is a hybrid: plywood for the big flat parts, solid wood for the edges, frames and anything shaped. That is not a compromise — it is using each material where its properties are an advantage.
A plywood carcass with a solid wood face frame and solid edging is the standard beginner cabinet for exactly this reason. It is stable, it is affordable, it looks like furniture, and every part is doing the job it is good at.

The short answer
Wide and flat and it must not move: plywood. Narrow, structural or beautiful: solid wood. Most projects want both, and the skill is putting each one where its weakness does not matter.
If you are choosing for a first project, plywood is more forgiving: it arrives flat, it stays flat, and it removes the movement problem entirely while you are still learning everything else.
Frequently asked questions
Is plywood stronger than solid wood?
It depends on the direction. Plywood is far more consistent, because alternating veneer layers mean it is nearly as strong across the sheet as along it, and it resists splitting. Solid wood is stronger along the grain and much weaker across it. For a wide shelf that must not sag or split, plywood usually wins; for a chair leg, solid wood.
Does plywood expand and contract?
Barely, and that is its single biggest advantage. Because alternate layers run at right angles, each layer restrains the one next to it, so a plywood panel stays essentially the same size through the seasons. A solid wood panel of the same width can move a noticeable amount across its width between a humid summer and a dry winter.
Is plywood cheaper than solid wood?
Per square foot of panel, usually yes, and the gap grows with width — a 24-inch wide solid panel has to be glued up from several boards, while plywood arrives that wide. Cabinet-grade hardwood-faced plywood is not cheap, though, and for narrow parts solid wood often costs less.
Can you use plywood for a table top?
Yes, and it is a good choice for a work surface or a painted table. The two catches are the edges, which show the layers and need banding or a solid edge strip, and the face veneer, which is thin enough that you cannot sand or plane it much before you go through it.
What is the difference between plywood and MDF?
Plywood is thin layers of real wood glued in alternating directions; MDF is wood fibers compressed with resin into a uniform board. MDF is flatter, smoother and cheaper, and takes paint beautifully. It is also much heavier, has no real strength when screwed into its edge, swells permanently if it gets wet, and produces very fine dust.
How do you stop plywood chipping when you cut it?
Use a fine blade — 40 or more teeth on a circular saw, 60 to 80 on a table or miter saw — set the depth so the blade projects only slightly below the sheet, cut with the good face down if using a circular saw, and score the cut line first with a knife. Backing the cut with a sacrificial board also works well.
