How Much Space Do You Need for a Woodworking Shop?
Real footprints for a bench, a saw and an assembly area, the clearances nobody mentions, and what genuinely fits in half a garage bay.

“Do I have enough space?” is the second question every beginner asks, right after the tool list. It gets answered badly, usually by someone with a two-car garage saying you need less than you think, without ever giving a number.
Here are the numbers. Not machine footprints from a catalog — those are the least useful figures in this whole subject — but the space each thing needs around it in order to be usable, which is where small shops actually fail.
The rule that governs everything: clearance, not footprint
A benchtop table saw occupies about 2 feet by 2 feet. To rip an 8-foot board on it you need 8 feet of clear run in front of the blade and another 8 feet behind. The saw is 4 square feet; the operation is an 18-foot corridor.
This is the single thing that catches people out. Every tool has a footprint you can measure and an operating envelope you cannot see, and it is always the envelope that decides whether a layout works. So the question is not “will the saw fit?” but “can I get an 8-foot board past it?”
The good news is that operating envelopes can overlap, and they can point out of an open garage door. The bad news is that they cannot overlap with a car.
Real numbers, thing by thing
The workbench
- Footprint: about 2 ft by 5 ft is a comfortable beginner bench. 2 ft by 4 ft works.
- Clearance: 3 ft of standing room on the working side, minimum. Ideally access to at least two sides.
- Height: 34 to 38 in for most people — wrist height with arms relaxed.
A bench against a wall works fine for beginner projects. Being able to walk all the way around it is a genuine luxury and not a requirement.
Assembly space
- Footprint: whatever your largest project is, plus 18 in on every side for clamps and hands.
- Clearance: the ability to walk round three sides while carrying something.
This is the requirement small shops forget entirely. Glue-ups need space and they need it for hours, which means you cannot be using that floor for anything else while the glue cures. A pair of sawhorses and a sheet of plywood is the classic answer, because it folds away afterwards.
Sheet goods
- Footprint: a full sheet is 4 ft by 8 ft.
- Clearance: enough to walk round it and run a saw along it — call it 6 ft by 10 ft.

A benchtop table saw
- Footprint: roughly 2 ft by 2 ft, plus a stand.
- Clearance: the full length of the longest board, in front and behind. Plus about 3 ft to the left for your body.

A miter saw
- Footprint: about 2 ft by 2 ft.
- Clearance: 6 to 8 ft either side to support long trim, and about 2 ft behind for the chip stream.
This is the most deceptive tool in a small shop — small machine, 16-foot working length. A common fix is to mount it in a wall bench with folding supports either side, or to accept that long stock gets cut in the driveway. Our miter saw vs circular saw comparison covers whether you need one at all.
Lumber storage
- Footprint: a wall, ideally overhead. A modest stash is 8 ft long and needs stickers between layers.
- Clearance: none, if it is above head height.

Three layouts that work
The 8 ft by 8 ft corner — the real minimum
Bench along one wall, pegboard and shelving above it, a rolling cart under it. Machines are benchtop and get lifted onto the bench when needed and put away after. Sheet goods are broken down outside. Assembly happens on the bench, or on sawhorses set up in the middle of the floor and folded away afterwards.
This is a genuine shop and plenty of good furniture has come out of one. What it costs you is time: everything has to be set up and put away, so a two-hour session includes twenty minutes of logistics.
Half a bay — about 10 ft by 20 ft
The standard beginner garage shop. Bench along the back wall, mobile table saw or miter station against the side wall, storage vertical everywhere, and a clear floor in the middle that doubles as assembly space and the run for long rips.
The rule that makes it work: everything heavy is on wheels and lives against a wall. Roll it out, use it, roll it back. Nothing has a permanent position in the middle of the floor.
A full single bay — about 12 ft by 20 ft
Now you can leave a machine set up. A table saw in the middle with an outfeed table that doubles as an assembly bench is the classic arrangement, with the rip direction running toward the door.
This is comfortable rather than necessary, and it is worth saying plainly: the difference between half a bay and a full bay is convenience, not capability.
The four tricks that buy you space
- Go vertical. Wall storage is the highest-return change in any small shop. Anything on the floor is in the way; anything on the wall is not. Our storage and organization guide covers pegboard and cabinets.
- Put wheels on everything. A machine on a mobile base has the footprint of the wall it parks against.
- Use the door. An open garage door adds twenty feet of clearance for free. Orient your longest operations along that axis.
- Make surfaces do two jobs. Outfeed table as assembly bench, bench top as machine stand, sawhorses and a sheet of ply as a temporary assembly table that folds flat.
Height and light matter as much as floor area
Two things that do not show up in a floor plan and change how a small shop feels.
Ceiling height determines whether you can stand a sheet of plywood on end, flip a long board, or hang storage above head height. Under 8 feet gets awkward fast.

The honest answer
You need about 8 by 8 feet to have a shop, about 10 by 20 to be comfortable, and a clear run out of a doorway for long stock. Everything beyond that is convenience.
And the constraint that actually stops people is never the one they expect. It is not floor area — it is having nowhere to put a half-finished project down. Solve that with a shelf or a rolling cart, and a surprisingly small space works indefinitely.

How much space does a table saw need around it?

You do not need that space permanently — you need to be able to open the door, or turn the saw to run along the longest axis of the room.
How high should a workbench be?
Somewhere between wrist height and a couple of inches below, standing with arms relaxed at your sides — for most people that lands around 34 to 38 inches. Lower suits hand planing, where you want to get your weight over the work; higher suits joinery and assembly, where you want to see what you are doing.
Do I need a whole garage bay for woodworking?
No. A whole bay is comfortable rather than necessary, and plenty of good work comes out of an 8 by 10 corner. What actually limits a small shop is not floor area but clear runs for long stock and somewhere to put a project down between sessions.
