Workshop Tools and Their Uses: A Beginner's Glossary

Every tool in a first woodworking shop, in plain English: what it is, what it actually does, and whether a beginner needs it yet.

Woodworking has a jargon problem. Every guide assumes you already know what a rip cut is, why a marking gauge is different from a tape measure, and what someone means by “a No. 4.” None of it is complicated once somebody explains it in plain language, which is what this page is for.

Tools are grouped by what they do rather than by whether they plug in, because that is how you actually decide what to buy. Every operation in woodworking falls into one of six categories, and a first shop needs at least one tool from each.

1. Measuring and marking

Tape measure.Rough sizing and long measurements. The hook on the end is deliberately loose by exactly its own thickness, so it reads the same pushed against something as hooked over an edge — that is not a defect.

Combination square. Checks 90 and 45 degrees, marks lines square to an edge, and sets depths with its sliding rule. The most-used layout tool in most shops.

Speed square. A fixed triangle for marking square and 45-degree crosscut lines quickly, and for guiding a circular saw on short cuts. Cheap and nearly indestructible.

Marking knife. Scores a zero-width line that a chisel or saw can register against. The biggest single accuracy upgrade available for the money.

Marking gauge. Scribes a line a set distance from an edge, repeatably. This is how joint shoulders end up matching without measuring each one.

Dividers. Two adjustable points for stepping off equal spacings and scribing arcs, without arithmetic.

2. Cutting

Panel saw / hand saw. A stiff-bladed saw for cutting boards to rough length by hand. Coarse teeth cut fast and rough.

Backed saw (dovetail saw, dozuki). A thin blade with a stiffening spine, for cutting joints accurately to a line. The spine limits depth of cut.

Coping saw. A thin blade in a springy frame that cuts curves and removes waste from joints.

Circular saw.A spinning disc in a shoe that rides on the work — fast, deep, straight-line cuts. With a clamped straightedge it breaks down sheet goods as accurately as a table saw.

Jigsaw. A reciprocating narrow blade that cuts curves and interior cutouts. Not a precision tool; cut wide and clean up after.

Miter saw. A crosscut specialist that makes repeatable square and angled cuts to length. Cannot rip, cannot cut sheet goods.

Table saw. The traditional shop centerpiece: rips boards to width accurately and repeatably. Also the machine with the highest injury rate, which is why our table saw guide makes the case for waiting.

Two words worth knowing: a rip cut runs along the grain (making a board narrower), a crosscut runs across it (making a board shorter). Blades are designed for one or the other, or a compromise.

3. Shaping and smoothing

Bench chisel. A flat sharpened blade for paring and chopping joints. Struck with a wooden mallet, never a steel hammer.

Block plane. A small one-handed plane for end grain, chamfers and trimming things flush. The plane a beginner should buy first.

Bench plane (No. 4, No. 5). A larger two-handed plane for flattening and smoothing board faces. The number describes the length; higher means longer.

Spokeshave. A very short plane with handles either side, for fairing curves.

Rasps and files. Toothed steel for removing material on curves and awkward shapes where a plane cannot reach.

Random orbital sander. A powered pad that spins and oscillates simultaneously, so it leaves no repeating scratch pattern. The standard tool for final smoothing.

Router.A high-speed spinning bit that cuts grooves, shapes edges and makes joints. Enormously versatile and genuinely loud — see our router picks.

4. Holding

Clamps. The tool you will always want more of. Bar clamps for glue-ups, one-handed trigger clamps for holding work while you cut, spring clamps for light jobs. Our clamp roundup covers what to buy first.

Workbench.A flat, heavy surface that does not move when you push against it. Mass is the point — a light bench slides across the floor under a plane stroke.

Vise. A screw-operated jaw fixed to the bench for gripping work upright, particularly for sawing joints.

Bench dogs and holdfasts. Pegs and hooked bars that drop into holes in the benchtop to clamp work flat against the surface.

Sawhorses. Portable supports for cutting long stock and sheet goods away from the bench.

5. Joining and fastening

Cordless drill / driver. Drills holes and drives screws. The first power tool almost everyone should own.

Impact driver. Drives screws with rotational hammer blows. Much better than a drill at driving long screws, much worse at drilling accurate holes.

Countersink bit. Cuts a tapered recess so a screw head sits flush rather than proud.

Pocket hole jig.Guides a drill to make angled holes for screwing boards together at right angles — a fast, strong, beginner friendly joint.

Wood glue. A properly made and clamped glue joint in long grain is stronger than the wood around it. Glue is not the weak link people assume it is.

Mallet. Wooden or resin, for striking chisels and assembling joints without bruising the wood.

6. Safety and shop infrastructure

Safety glasses or goggles. Must be impact rated (ANSI Z87.1). Ordinary glasses are not.

Hearing protection. Earmuffs or plugs with a stated Noise Reduction Rating. Power saws run well above the level where damage begins.

Respirator. A NIOSH-approved N95 or better for dust; organic vapor cartridges for finishes. Cloth masks do nothing here.

Shop vacuum. Connects to tool dust ports to capture dust at source, which is the most effective thing you can do about it.

Push stick. A shaped piece of scrap that pushes wood past a blade so your hand does not have to.

What a beginner actually needs from this list

Do I need a jointer and planer as a beginner?

No. These are machines for flattening and thicknessing rough lumber, and beginners almost always buy pre-surfaced boards instead. They are expensive, large, and solve a problem you can avoid entirely for your first year or two by buying dimensioned stock.

What is the difference between a bench and a workbench?

In practice, none — but a real woodworking workbench has features a table does not: mass so it does not move under a plane stroke, a flat top, and a way to clamp work down or hold it in a vise. A folding portable bench is the usual compromise in a garage shared with a car.
