How to Read Woodworking Plans

Cut lists, exploded views, section marks and the dimensions that are lying to you — how to read a plan properly before you make the first cut.

A woodworking plan looks like a technical document, and beginners tend to treat it like an instruction manual: start at the top, follow each step, hope. That approach produces a lot of parts that do not fit each other. A plan is not a sequence of instructions — it is a description of a finished object, drawn from several angles, plus a parts list. Learning to read it in the right order takes about ten minutes and saves entire projects.

The parts of a plan

The cut list

A table of every piece: part name, quantity, and dimensions given as thickness × width × length— in that order, near-universally. Two things about cut lists trip people up.

First, these are finished sizes, not what to buy. You need extra for saw kerfs (every cut removes an eighth of an inch or so of material), for trimming ends square, and for the piece you will inevitably cut short.

Second, cut lists assume the author’s material. If the list says a part is 3/4 inch thick and your plywood measures 23/32, every joint and every overall dimension that depends on that thickness has just shifted. See how to buy lumber at the home center for why nominal and actual sizes differ.

The exploded view

The single most useful drawing on the sheet. Everything is pulled apart along the direction it assembles, so you can see which part meets which, and in what order things go together. Study this before anything else — it answers “what am I actually building” faster than any list of steps.

Orthographic views

Front, side and top, drawn straight-on with no perspective. Because they are not perspective drawings, every dimension in them is true and measurable. When two views seem to disagree, one is usually showing a part hidden behind another; look for dashed lines, which conventionally indicate edges you cannot see from that angle.

Section views

A pair of arrows with a letter — A–A, B–B — marks an imaginary slice through the piece. Somewhere else on the sheet you will find “Section A–A”, which shows what that slice looks like, usually with the cut material hatched. This is how a plan shows joinery that is buried inside the assembly: a mortise, a dado, a rabbet, a hidden fastener. If you cannot work out how two parts join, find the section view.

Detail views

A circle or box drawn around a small area, labeled with a letter, and redrawn larger elsewhere. Used for joints and profiles too small to dimension in the main view. If a plan has a detail view, that area is where the difficulty lives.

Reading dimensions properly

Dimension lines have arrows at each end and the measurement written on or above the line. Extension lines run from the object to show exactly what is being measured — and the exact endpoints matter enormously. A 24-inch shelf might be 24 inches overall, or 24 inches between the uprights, and those are very different pieces of wood. Follow the extension lines to the surfaces they touch.

Watch for these conventions:

  • Overall vs internal dimensions.Nearly always the source of a plan that “does not add up”.
  • Reference dimensions, often shown in brackets. These are for information only, derived from other measurements — do not build to them.
  • “Typ.” means typical: this dimension applies to all similar features, so the plan only labels one of them.
  • “O.C.”means on center — measured center-to-center rather than edge-to-edge. Common for shelf pins and fasteners.
  • Not to scale. Never measure a printed drawing with a ruler and scale it up. Printers rescale, PDFs get resized, and the numbers are the only trustworthy thing on the page.

Grain direction is data too

Good plans indicate grain direction with fine lines or arrows on each part. This is not decoration. Grain direction determines strength, how a part is planed, and — most importantly — which way it will move with the seasons.

A solid-wood part expands and contracts across its width and barely at all along its length. Rotate a part 90 degrees from the plan for aesthetic reasons and you may have created a joint where two parts move against each other, which will split something within a year. The routine before you cut anything

  1. Read the whole plan first. All of it, including the notes at the bottom. Assembly order is often decided by something mentioned only on the last page.
  2. Check the arithmetic. Add up part widths and see whether they equal the stated overall dimension. Published plans contain errors more often than you would expect, and finding one now costs nothing.
  3. Measure your actual material and rewrite any dimension that depends on stock thickness.
  4. Mark up the plan. Print it, cross out numbers you have changed, write your own beside them. A clean plan at the end of a project usually means someone was working from memory.
  5. Label every part as you cut itwith a pencil or a piece of tape, using the plan’s names. Four almost-identical rails become unidentifiable within an hour, and a labeled part is a part you cannot install upside down.
  6. Cut the longest and widest parts first. If you make a mistake on a long part, the offcut can still become a short one. It does not work the other way round.

Where plans go wrong

Three failure modes account for most of it. Cumulative error: measuring each part from the end of the last instead of from a single reference, so eight small errors add into one large one. Measure everything from one reference face and mark with a marking knife.

Building to the plan instead of to the piece. If the carcass you actually built is a sixteenth narrower than drawn, cut the shelf to fit the carcass, not to the number. The object in front of you is the authority.

Assuming the plan is right. Plans are written by people, often for different tools and different stock than yours. Treat it as a well-informed proposal rather than a specification, and check it as you go. What is a cut list?

Why don't the dimensions in a plan add up?

Usually because the plan assumes nominal material sizes while your actual boards are smaller — a '3/4 inch' board is 3/4 inch, but '3/4 inch' plywood is typically 23/32. Always measure your actual material and adjust the plan to it, rather than trusting a number printed months ago in a different workshop.

What does an exploded view show?

The assembly pulled apart along its assembly axes, with each part floating in the position it goes. It answers 'what goes where and in what order', which a normal drawing cannot show. It is usually the most useful single image in a plan and the first one to study.
